Sparked by Southern States seceding and forming the Confederacy because of the election of Abraham Lincoln an anti-slavery Republican. The Southern states relied on agriculture to survive and slaves kept big farms working efficiently and with little cost. It war began on April 12, 1861 and ended May 9, 1865. The anti-slavery Union battled the seceded pro-slavery Confederate States of America.
In the 1950s, Texas was at the forefront of two major, but very different civil rights movements—the African-American movement and the Mexican-American movement. Fighting Their Own Battles by Brian Behnken describes and compares the separate battles for rights of the two movements. People in Texas knew what was happening and newspapers reported about the different events that occurred throughout the 1950s. In hindsight, and with the help of Behnken’s book, one is able to see the subtle influences of both civil rights movements in the Texas newspapers. The Battle of Passchendaele took place on July 31st, 1917, when the British launched an attack on the Germans holding the Passchendaele ridge overlooking Ypres, Belgium. Canadian Corps’ began their attack on October 26th, 1917, but it was very difficult to succeed because of poor weather conditions. The Person’s Case in 1929 was a major achievement for Canadians because five women, known as the Alberta Five, succeeded in having women defined as “persons” and as a result, women could serve in the Senate. The film Dances With Wolves is a moving, culturally significant American western film produced in 1990 and directed by Kevin Costner, who also plays the lead role of John J. Dunbar. It portrays a fictional account of the relationship between a soldier and a tribe of Sioux indians. In the beginning, Dunbar is an injured soldier who accidentally makes himself a hero while trying to commit suicide by riding his horse in front of the enemy. When given a choice for where he wants to be stationed he requests the frontier, because he wants to see it “before it’s gone. ”While stationed alone at Fort Sedgwick in Dakota territory, he befriends the people of a nearby Lakota tribe.
“Attack Dogs” From the 1950s through the 1960s the United States presence the effort by the African American community to gain equality and eliminate segregation in what is called the Civil Rights Movement. One of the images that highly influenced the outcome of the movement and helped achieve legislation that treated everyone equal was “Attack Dogs,” a photograph taken by Charles Moore in 1963 and published in the LIFE magazine. This photograph helped shed light on the unethical treatment of the peaceful protesters by police officers in Birmingham, Alabama, which essentially aided in gaining even more momentum and support for the Civil Rights Movement. Writer John Kaplan from LIFE magazine depicts Charles Moore as the most well-known and influential photographer during the Civil Rights Movement from 1958-1965 (127).
