David Baron’s “The Beast in the Garden” primarily follows the life of Michael Sanders, a biologist working mainly in Boulder, Colorado. Michael’s mission throughout the story is the study and prediction of the dangers of urban cougars. Living in a city of staunch environmentalists, Michael’s attempts to sway public opinion is a daunting task. As it would seem, the majority of Boulder environmentalists value cougar’s lives over human lives. Michael Sanders is a middle aged biologist, originally from a small town in Tennessee.
I have decided to discuss the differences and similarities between George Perkins Marsh and George Bird Grinnell. George Bird Grinnell was a conservationist who was founding member of the Boone and Cricket club along with Theodore Roosevelt and Gifford Pinchot; he also wrote several articles to spread awareness of buffalo conservation. George Perkins Marsh was also a conservationist he helped to create the Adirondack park, which includes wetlands old-growth forest and even some towns; he believed that that we need to use our resources sustainably to maintain the welfare of our future generations. Our beliefs, culture, and needs as humans influence our relationships with wildlife and how we view each individual species as well as how we treat/preserve them. After reading Wild Ones, it is obvious that the author Jon Mooallem and the others mentioned in the book believe that polar bears, birds and bees are specific animals that deem worthy of protection. Mooallem provides many examples of people who give reasoning as to why we should help preserve these animals. Mooallem uses the specific people’s backgrounds to show the difference of opinions in someone who has knowledge of the animal versus someone that only adores the animal because of the animals looks.
Foer recognizes this when he specifically addresses environmentalists, so he adapts his approach from emotional appeals to logical appeals. Foer argues, and supports with evidence from reputable sources, that the fruition of animal rights activists’ goals naturally benefits the environment. For instance, Foer presents statistics that show that farmed animals are significant contributors to climate change (58-59). By utilizing statistics from authoritative sources, Foer attempts to draw the logical conclusion that those who are concerned about the environment must be concerned about animal rights. Therefore, environmentalists who accept his logical construction may be more persuaded to accept his conclusions.
What is a hero? According to Google, a hero is “a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.” (Google.com). Many will agree Miep Gies fits this description; an article written about her gives her the title “Hero of the Holocaust” (Legacy.com). She’s a hero because she protected some of the people targeted by the Nazis, preserved the diary of a girl known all over the world, and continued to spread hope and encouragement for the rest of her life.

In order for people like Alaskans to survive, they need guns to kill these animals. If guns are banned, how will the people that live in these remote areas get their food? It is unrealistic to believe that you can just go outside, hunt a bear, and kill it using hand-to-hand combat. We should value nature and its animals much more (Becker, 1971). In today’s world we have what Becker calls a “power-saw mentality” (Becker, 1971, p. 114). Instead we’re greedy with what nature has to offer us. “Man takes what nature offers us, but usually only what he needs” (Becker, 1971, p. 114). There is a psychological difference in today’s world of what we enjoy out of nature (Becker, 1971).
In recent years, the topic of saving the Earth from Humans has shown itself in many conversations amongst the people of the public. Saving the World will be an issue we must solve in the near future because we are causing a mass extinction for animals, and we are harming and killing humans, but we can resolve it by using technology to reduce global warming and setting aside reserves. The most important thing humans must do in regards to this topic is begin to educate themselves and others on how drastic we must be in regards to it. The first major issue that must be made clear is the great peril animals are in, and what this means for the planet and humans.
Review of Literature Environmental issues began to be discussed and debated only towards the end of the 20th century. Since then significant amount of literature has been penned down raising awareness about issues of pollution, deforestation, animal rights and several others however it has failed to result in major changes, ideas or even actions to save the environment. Several species of animals have become extinct; pollution level is at an all-time high, global warming is leading to severe climate changes all across the globe but these problems do not seem to alarm the decision makers. Leydier & Martin (2013) also states that, “despite the increasing expression of concern in political and media debates about issues such as climate change, pollution and threats to biodiversity, “political ecology” (operating at the confluence of scientific developments, political engagement and ethical debates) is still trying to find its bearings” (p.7). It is quite evident that environmental issues are not treated in equivalence to political, economic, social or even religious issues.
