The book takes place in Italy during World War I. Lieutenant Federick Henry is American, but he is fighting on the side of the Italians. At the start of the book, you get to see through Frederick henry's point of view and his description of his surroundings. At the start of the book he spends a lot of time explaining everything around him, what he sees, and who he meets. The audience doesn't even know the narrator's name until he is addressed as "Mr. Henry," (25) by Catherine Barkley. This provides a lot of mystery as to what his name is and who he is specifically. There isn't a lot of focus on henry's own backstory and upbringing. The point of view is in first person throughout the first two books. This town is further from the fighting and is very peaceful. Because of the winter snow the war is over for a year till next spring. While in the mess hall, Henry talks to the priest, captain, major, and other lieutenants. They recommend him to visit places all over Italy while on his leave. When he returns Henry talks to his roommate Rinaldi about his leave and what he did. The next day henry leaves with Rinaldi and meets Catherine Berkley. At first sight, he instantly finds her attractive. She talks about her dead fiancée who died in the battle of the Somme. The next day they kiss and start to date. They both know that they both don't actually love each other yet. Later on, when she is sick; Henry realizes that he feels lonely without her. The next day Henry tells her he has to leave for an attack. She gives him a St. Anthony medal to protect him which he foreshadows he will lose when he gets hurt. After getting caught in an explosion which kills Passini, he is taken to the hospital. While healing Rinaldi tells Henry that he will get an award. When the Priest come to visit him the following day he admits to not liking the war. Book one ends with the doctors send him to Milan so that they have more space for the upcoming
