In the shadows of American misogyny, young women navigate a complex landscape that shapes their future as a whole. A surprising amount of people don’t take these kinds of things to mind, making discrimination against women more of a commonality. As women grow, there’s more of an untrusted protection put on them from practically anyone around them. Misogynistic teachings and ingrained gender roles in media and education intertwine, shaping a future where teen girls face a challenging barrier between leadership and education. This changes someone's outlook on their futures and hopes significantly. Misogynistic attitudes have been causally integrated throughout media and in women’s lives in general. Matheson continues listing some behaviors that occur, such as casual use of mildly misogynistic language like “girly” or even just a dismissive attitude toward women overall. Women are subjected to certain expectations, and it is difficult to find leadership roles that people expect. These expectations include having a nurturing personality, which is associated with being a mother/caretaker. More examples are dressing in typical feminine clothing, being polite, and accommodating. Unfortunately, a lot of people do not expect a lot from women. Team MCC of Harvard conducted a survey targeting around 20,000 students from 59 different middle schools and high schools.
