Family reunions are often used to dwell upon the past and reflect upon one’s life. Richard Rodriguez, in is his passage, goes to extreme lengths to explain to the reader his carefully taken observation of his family’s life. Looking deeper into the words and feelings of the passage, Rodriguez portrays a sense of strong family values. It is apparent (by his selective use of diction and narrative structure found throughout the passage) that Rodriguez is writing to a more mature, experienced audience. As a mature writer, Rodriguez knows that the best way to connect with his audience is through the one day responsible for some of their greatest childhood memories -- Christmas.
Have you ever had trouble finding faith in a difficult situation? In the book " Life as We Knew It" by Susan Pfeffer, the author portrays many different themes throughout the book. In the book, the theme is to always have faith and hope even in the hardest of times. One way the author portrays the theme in the reoccurrence of unfortunate events. Throughout the story, Miranda, the main character, is having trouble finding hope in the troubling times that not only her but everyone is going through.
As I read Hunger of Memory, Chapter 4, Complexion; I feel this topic played an important role in Rodriguez’s life. As a child he was always aware of his skin color, due to the fact that his mother was also calling attention to him. His mother was very sensitive to his skin color and always reminding him to stay out of the sun. For example, they were at a pool one day she called in Spanish “to put a towel over your shoulders,” (133) this would prevent him from getting any darker. His mother would even teach him ways to lighten his skin.
How is this purpose conveyed? The audience for this piece are people who are interested in Rodriguez’s childhood and education and seeing how scholarship children can become successful. The writer’s purpose is to explain why and how he became a scholarship and academically successful in a bilingual household with the family’s main focus on Spanish. This purpose is shown as the writer takes the reader on a journey through his childhood.
I am writing this in hopes that this will serve as a testimony on Samantha Rowe’s behalf. I am hopeful that this will be considered as an adequate testimony in lieu of me being present. Throughout the memior, Bechdel reffelcts on her own life experiences and uses her home business as a metaphor for the complexities of human relationships and the passage of time. The author explores the nature of love, loss, and grief, as well as the challenges of growing up in a family and community with minimal cultural exchange. Through bechdels personal story, she invited readers to consider their own lives and reflect on universal themes that are central to all people.
