Brian Regan is a man from Long Island, New York. Growing up, he was often picked on for his dyslexia, which made people think he was unintelligent. After high school, he cheated on an exam to get into the U.S. Air Force, where he met his wife and was very happy. In 1995, he was moved to the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) where he had access to top secret government information and he learned to code. After falling deep into debt, Regan stole over a thousand pages of classified information from the NRO and attempted to sell it to foreign countries. His letter to potential buyers, written mostly in code and laced with misspellings, landed on the doorstep of the FBI. After a thorough investigation, the FBI arrested Regan at the airport as he tried to leave the country. They initially pushed for the death penalty but settled for life in prison after they made a deal with him. He had to show them where he buried the documents. He was often bullied and made fun of because of his dyslexia. The harassment he received growing up contributed to the anger that led him to betray his country. However, the author doesn’t show this anger immediately. In fact, the author portrays Regan as a pretty good guy. He seems to be happily married and he
