This sociological analysis paper will analyze the case of Monica Harwell, who is a female of African-American origin working at the Con Edison electrical utility company. She faced discrimination from her colleagues because of the color of her skin and the fact that she was a woman. Nevertheless, despite her qualifications and her hard work to the extent of even going back to school to better her career, which made her more qualified than most of her colleagues, Monica Harwell faced a lot of discrimination amongst her work mates, her case was so severe that she would even go urinating in the woods while at work, other colleagues would speak behind her back just to make sure that she does not progress in her career, she is even reported saying
The rooms they were required to work in were faint in light and had little to no conditioned air flowing through the factory. The workers worked from seven in the morning until eight at night and only had a half-hour lunch break. This was very common for many immigrants living in the city of Manhattan and wasn’t seen as an issue until the buildings started killing many workers by getting caught on fire. It was said that these factors that these women workers worked in were normal because, “women will submit to worse conditions, longer hours, and shorter wages than men” because “”they only had themselves to support”” (p. 96).
There are women all around the world who are being continually treated as objects, and the majority of them are being forced to live lives that aren’t their own, lives that were devised for them. Elizabeth, a woman in the short story, “The Leaving” by Budge Wilson, was treated her entire life like a maid; she even began to believe that her only purpose was to wait on her family and get the daily chores done. Not once in her entire life was she ever thanked for the hours of labor she completed from day to day in order to benefit her family. On the other hand, Samia from the short story, “Another Evening at the Club” by Alifa Rifaat, was forced to go along with an arranged marriage, the man she married being wealthy and from a well-known, high-reputation family. However, during this marriage, Samia makes a mistake by accusing an innocent girl of something that Samia later realizes she did herself.
Throughout the speech, she appeals to the representatives’ guilt by emphasizing that these laws “worked a hardship on women who need or want to work overtime and on women who need or want better jobs” (8). She ridicules and guilts those who agree to limit women’s occupations, dismiss them to jobs with low wages that have minimal opportunities for promotions, and argues “working conditions and hours that are harmful to women are harmful to men” (16). This campaign marked the first time women at a rate this high came together to join something like the workforce. The development of working women was excellent, but it was certainly not the only result of the Rosie campaign. When finally given the confidence to work like their husbands or fathers did, women felt united with not only other women, but all of society. Flavia Di Consiglio, journalist for the BBC, writes that Rosie the Riveter propaganda was “likely intended to encourage acceptance of women in a traditionally male-dominated workplace”, but also “went on to gain greater meaning.” This campaign was one of the first to help accept and normalize women getting out of their homes and working a man’s job, especially in the workforce.
When all the workers seem interested in any man that comes in the business, perhaps this type of relationship is required of the women that work there. This should be unsettling for the audience as no one should be forced for low pay to do something that is uncomfortable for the worker.
