History is filled with tales of those who were willing to risk it all in order to be the change that the world needed. In the book, The Awakening by Kate Chopin, Edna Pontellier, realizes the sins that are imparted upon her by society and is willing to sacrifice everything about her past self in order to be break free of the chains that entangle her. Edna’s sacrifices include her comfortable lifestyle and esteemed reputation; however, to Edna these are small sacrifices that are needed in order to progress as an individual and expand into a new realm of independence. As she develops throughout the story, she starts to value a sense of independence and of equality more and more. However, the bonds placed on her by upper-class society's expectations mean that in order to achieve a position in life where she can embody her values, she must sacrifice her current culture and position.
It was also an amazing book because one of the themes I found demonstrates how far a positive attitude can take you. While working so hard, her hands were bleeding with blisters, and while she was freezing and starving to death, Lina’s mother, Elena, manages to find happiness in the midst of her struggles. The book quotes, “'Our sense of humor,' said Mother, her eyes pooled with laughing tears. They can't take that away from us, right?' " Chapter 33: Elena is a wonderful example of using a positive attitude, and it helps me put my life into perspective.

She then changed for good and let go of her bad emotions to set up a good life for herself. It wasn’t until years later she realized the true beauty of the book. Right now I have goals, goals that I sometime doubt that I can achieve. Sure, I say that I will go through with everything I set up for myself but I feel that I will reach a point where I am too tired and fed up to continue to the end and give up. That’s something I don’t want to happen to me. Reading this book helped me remember that things like certificates, diplomas, money, wealth, etc. will not be handed down to me. I need to work for what I want, it will not be easy, but it will definitely be worth it in the end.

Before reading this book, I had no motivation, I didn’t think I could fulfil my dreams at this age. I wanted to learn to be more confident, work harder and learn from my past mistakes and I learnt just that, however, there were times when I was reading the book I felt that my life was very disorganised and there was no hope, at the start of the book Lilly reminds the readers to not be discouraged as this is a chance to grow and learn. I realised that if you want something you have to work hard for it. This book doesn’t contain fluffy, inspirational tumblr quotes or hopeful thoughts to make you feel good about yourself. A quote that stuck with me after reading this book was “There's no escalators - there's only staircases to success.

What caught my attention in chapter 14 was topic on major depression. This is because of my experience growing up with major depression and never being diagnosed. I can never remember when I started feeling depressed, but by the age of 12 I knew something was not right. My parents sheltered me my whole life and didn’t believe in mental illnesses or at least they never understood them. The text book characterizes major depressive disorder by a depressed mood most of day, nearly every day, for a period of at least 2 weeks (APA, 2013 pg. 553.)
