A Whole New Mind by Daniel Pink discusses the shift of our generation's needs for different types of thinkers. According to the book, there are two types of thinking. Left-directed or left-brained and right-directed or right-brained thinking. L-directed thinkers are much more analytical and factual than R-directed thinkers, who are artistic, sympathetic, and more emotional. In the past, the industrial age required physical laborers, mostly for factory work; however, as the informational age crept in, the need for l-brained people expanded.
Nowadays when we are not sure of question we turn towards the Internet, to try and find answers. In the Article "You Still Need Your Brain," Daniel Willingham argues that memorizing facts remains an essential skill even in today's world of internet searches. He builds his argument by first acknowledging the importance of technology and then explaining why it cannot replace human memory. . Willingham provides scientific evidence and real-life examples to support his claim, making a compelling case for the value of memorization in our ever-changing world.
Thompson provides how he had his own research group for collecting data on teenage brain development. Although Thompson may have experience in this subject field we do not know if he is a completely credible source and if he is trustworthy. “Our colleagues at the National Institutes of Health have developed technology to map the patterns of the brain in individual children and teenagers.” Again, Thompson provides his colleagues as credible sources as a use of ethos in his article. However, they can be students in learning and have no true credibility
The excerpt from Teen Brain “Still under construction” by NIMH, the author believes that the teen brain is still changing, hormonally, emotionally, and intellectually, which effects a teenagers behavior. To begin, hormonal changes effect a teenagers behavior. Hormones cause stress which creates abnormal behavior for teenagers. “As with reproductive hormones, stress hormones can have complex effects on the brain, and as a result, behavior.” This shows that hormones cause sufficient stress which results in your behavior.

In the article “Startling Finds on Teenage Brains,” by Paul Thompson, he speaks about how adolescents lose brain tissue as they mature. Specifically gray matter, which according to Thompson, “...brain researchers believe supports all our thinking and emotions.” The matter is being purged at a rapid rate. It’s taking with it the cells that support risk-taking, impulses, and self-control. While this shouldn’t prove to be an excuse for adolescents to break the law, it should prove to be an explanation.
Maturity is the feeling of needing to prove that one is sophisticated and old enough to do certain things. In the short story “Growing Up,” Maria’s family went on a vacation while she stayed at home, but when she heard there was a car crash that happened near where her family was staying, she gets worried and thinks it is all her fault for trying to act mature and angering her father. Blame Your Brain” by Jennifer Connor-Smith, examines the brain being affected by hormones that make teens more sensitive to embarrassment. On the contrary, the second article, “Use It or Lose It: A good brain pruning” by Laura K. Zimmermann, discusses brain pruning, the process that removes connections between neurons that are not used. This pruning occurs during early childhood and in later adolescence.

An important factor in impulsive behavior is the correlations between parent-child relationships and testosterone levels resulting in precarious behavior or depression. Although, some children’s impulsive behavior is not a result of any of the causes listed above but rather environmental factors. Behavior is a learned trait, and a parent or teacher can reinforce correct behavior through teaching rules to help children exercise restraint in impulsive emotional responses.
