In the article by Nicholas Carr “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” the author is attempting to persuade readers to reflect upon the impact the internet has had in their ability to think critically. Carr is trying to prove that while yes, the internet is great, the benefits do not outweigh the consequences. Saying the internet is something people should try to stay away from is an argument that most of society would probably not agree with. Even though it might be difficult to acknowledge the consequences of the internet, I think that Carr provides an effective argument to do so. He admits “The web has been a godsend to me as a writer.” He then goes on to list all of the ways that it has helped him in his profession. Carr says that he is able to research in minutes, and he no longer has to spend as much time looking for information. He shows that he too relies on the internet. He predicts that people reading this article will be skeptical of what he is saying because he assumes that the readers use the internet, and so they would be reluctant to think of it negatively. He addresses this point by saying, “Maybe I’m a worrywart,” and “So yes you should be skeptical of my skepticism.” By aligning himself with the reader’s thoughts, the reader might be more inclined to trust him even more. I myself thought that if he understood that most people would think he was crazy and still came to the conclusion that the internet’s negative potential outweighs the positives it offers, then maybe it really is
