Analysis of Nicholas Carr’s “Is Google Making Us Stupid?"

Nicholas Carr (2008/2010 p.89) argues a prophetic warning--As a culture relying on computers to facilitate all knowledge of the world, is artificial intelligence preferable to a thoughtful and meditative human mind? With the all-encompassing internet influencing an entire population, is it the cause of altering mental habits of a nation? Carr, along with his friends and acquaintances, admit to similar experiences-- having their brains remapped and reprogramed by virtue of years of internet usage. Citing facts and statistics, he paints a vivid picture of how our mind is shaped and what our intellectual future might hold. Posing a clear and logical argument, his audience is inclined to query their own mental habits, thinking, and learning. Using typical and accurate evidence, concrete language, and his ability as an accomplished writer, Carr presents a convincing argument. As justification, he points to professionals, and his acquaintances’ experiences to demonstrate how the media affects their mental habits. Then, he compares the history of the clock, printing press, and the development of writing to progress and human knowledge, while highlighting the internet’s power in the process of mental development. Finally, he assesses what is at stake. By filling our minds with “’content’, “we will sacrifice something important, not only in ourselves, but in our culture”.
