Is Stereotype a good thing? the author shankar Vedantam says that a self-fulfilling stereotype can drag down performance. In the article she explains to us how that can happen. She tells us about how psychologists such as Claude Steele at Stanford University came up with the team “ stereotype threat “ for the phenomenon: When people are threatened by a negative stereotype they think applies to them, they can be subtly biased to live out that stereotype. She also tells us that Stereotype threats seem to emerge in large part because certain settings can subtly make particular groups feel out of place. I agree with her.
There was a time when i was stereotype and that was when people used to tell me that i wasn't going to be able to be in a soccer team because i wasn't going to handle it just because i was a girl. They said that girls don't really do sports and that i wasn't going to make it and be able to go through all of it like guys do. They said that just because guys do it it didn't mean i was going to handle like they did and that i was going to end up hurt because this was stuff for boys and not girls.
