In the article It’s Hard to Make It in America: How the United States Stopped Being the Land of Opportunity by Lane Kenworthy, talks about how family background and history has the biggest impact on your personal success in life. Overall the article touches on how america is working on closing the gap of opportunity for everyone of every race and gender, but consequently doing so has rearose the topic of family background and upbringing. This is due to all the factors that go into their upbringing, with the arguments that their parents money, access to a good education, and overall connections theses kids parents have pave a pathway to a more successful life; than if they were not exposed to all of these factors, subsequently proven by the data in the article to lead to a less successful future. The author uses quantitative data in this on multiple occasions to portray his point or further expand on topic so the reader could grasp the topic better. Most of the points Kenworthy makes are backed up with statistical data or analysis. Such as, “One useful tool might be the Earned Income Tax Credit. At the moment, the EITC provides an annual subsidy of up to $6,000 to households with less than $50,000 in earnings. That is helpful, but for a person with no children, the credit amounts to less than $500. That group — young adults with low earnings and no children — includes many Americans who grew up in disadvantaged circumstances.” Kenworthy uses data and facts to prove his thesis, and did well by backing up his arguments with these factors. He gets his point across by proving that these kids born into low income families have a disadvantage in life, but that gap is closing. With the support of some major political leaders, Affirmative Action policies have and are trying to be put into to place to try and balance out the uneven sides of the spectrum, and especially get immigrants and persons of low income to have the chance to seize an opportunity that could alter the course of their life, and that is something they may not have had before. They are other arguments to this topic, and some people may argue that, that is the way life is and to take advantage of your opportunities presented to you.
