Jamestown is a place where a lot of death happened. People died from starvation, disease, saltwater poisoning, dehydration, and attacks from the Indians and Spaniards. 13,000 Indians lived around Jamestown. When the people that lived in Jamestown set sail with 108 men they arrived at an island. When they got there they expected the Indians to welcome their arrival but instead they killed some of the men.
Jamestown: Founded by Captain John Smith on May 14, 1607, this Virginia Colony called Jamestown, is known as the first English settlement in the United States. This colony is very significant because it was the earliest English settlement. Headright System: The headright system was used to attract new settlers and to address labor scarcity.
The colony of Jamestown was at a population of 504 after an arrival of a fleet of 9 ships carrying women, men, children and much needed food and supplies. Captain John Smith took hold of the chaotic government and put in place rigid policies of discipline and agricultural cultivation. In 1608 a gunpowder accident wounding Smith, his rivals used this opportunity to force him to return to England and name George Percy as his successor as president of the council. The day before John Smith’s departure, Captain Davis arrived with 16 other men adding to the population of Jamestown. However, a few weeks later, president Percy sent Captain Ratcliffe to build a fort for fishing and trade at Point Comfort.
Many countries attempted to start colonies after the New World was discovered. During the late 1500’s England attempted to settle a permanent colony in present day North Carolina. Their purpose for sailing over to the New World was to interfere the shipping for Spain. With a blessing from Queen Elizabeth of England, Sir Walter Raleigh set off to the New World with the help of Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe in command of the ships. The first of the Roanoke Voyages came in 1584.
Colonization of The New World was a new concept at the time of The Age of Exploration. Spain was becoming a major superpower with the discovery and colonization of the Americas. “The English Monarch Queen Elizabeth told Sir Walter Raleigh to organize a colonizing mission,” (Tindall,Shi 36). With this expedition Sir Walter settlers were able to settle an area called Roanoke with little knowledge of this new world called America. Although the Roanoke Colony was never heard of again, Roanoke failed as a colony because it had a lack of communication with its only investor.
The colony of Roanoke was established as an English on July 1585 by Sir Walter Raleigh. This colony was soon low on food. They were no farmers but soldiers. so since their food supply ran out quickly, they relied on the local Native Americans to support them with food water, and resources. The Native Americans grew tired of supplying them and soon they stopped.
In August 1587 a second group of settlers arrived at Roanoke Island. The group was led by John White and consisted of 115 people including Johns White's wife and daughter,his granddaughter was the first english child born in the America.
The colony of Roanoke consisted about one hundred and seven people. The Roanoke colony also known as the lost colony was established on Roanoke island which today is now known as North Carolina. In 1585 the english colony of Roanoke was founded by Sir Walter Raleigh. In 1584 Sir Walter Raleigh had been granted a royal decree by Queen Elizabeth the first to colonize North America.

I traveled with other 103 men and boys in three ships, the Susan, the Godspeed and the Discovery. Sadly on of the men died on our way to the new World.

Towards the end of the Middle Ages, the monarchy began to expand their power and influence, eventually becoming absolute rulers. Having support from the merchant class, the monarchy attempted to unify and stabilize the nation states. In the late seventeenth, early eighteenth centuries, with hopes of expanding English trade and acquiring a broader market for English manufactured goods, the nation states were wealthy enough to fund voyages of discovery and exploration. Over time, ten colonies were established along the Atlantic coast of North America. The first permanent English settlement was established in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607 and in 1620 a ship landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts, marking it as the second permanent English settlement.
Starting in the early 1600’s settlers from England came to “The New World.” England and Spain were competing to claim this new undiscovered land. The English were the first to claim the land by sending the first group of settlers, the Chesapeake settlers. They settled in present day Virginia and Maryland. The Chesapeake settlers came for commercial and profit.
Early Jamestown In 1607, English Colonists set out on three ships and sailed up the mouth of Chesapeake Bay. They planned to establish the first permanent English settlement in North America. Many colonists died at early Jamestown. There were many reasons the English settlers died at early Jamestown, including their relationship with the local Native Americans, issues with the environment, and their skills.
