The colony of Roanoke was established as an English on July 1585 by Sir Walter Raleigh. This colony was soon low on food. They were no farmers but soldiers. so since their food supply ran out quickly, they relied on the local Native Americans to support them with food water, and resources. The Native Americans grew tired of supplying them and soon they stopped. this event led to the colonists raiding them. In June 1586, Sir Francis Drake, a Spanish explorer, saw this settlement low on food and offered to bring them back to England. Grenville, Raleigh’s cousin, soon returned with supplies to find that no one was there. he figured out they must have went back to England so he left 15 men and a lot of resources to continue the colony. This colony was also known as James Forte, James Towne, and James Cittie. It was originally established to find gold and silver but this colony didn’t find any. Since this colony was built right in the wilderness with swamps and forests, it was a hard settlement to build. Some problems with Jamestown included famine, disease, people who didn’t want to work, and conflict with the Native Americans. Although the colonists had problems with the native Americans, they still traded. One bad thing for Jamestown is when their food supply dwindled, they ate their own people that perished. Only half the amount of the colonists that started Jamestown were still alive. Then they realized that with resources and land they had, they could make money from selling tobacco. Later on, a new leader, John Smith, created the rule, “No work, no food.” This rule really helped out the colony with growing cash crops for the maximized chances of their survival.
