As technology grow and increasingly gets bigger and and better people are finding new ways to harness that information and use it to their advantage and learn from it. Clive Thompson suggests that technology is even helping literacy and this young generation. He states that “Young people write far more than any generation before them”(Source 7). You can thank Twitter and Facebook for the mass amount of posts and writing from teens. Thompson followingly says that “students were remarkably adept at what rhetoricians call kairos - addressing their audience and adapting their tone and technique to best get their point across.(Source 7)
In Connie Parkinson’s retirement speech, she takes advantage of her last moment as a teacher to warn us that we are losing our interpersonal connections. The culprit being cell phones. Through a laid-back style of speaking, Parkinson implores readers to acknowledge the harmful effects that come along with cell phone use. Passionate about her cause, Parkinson uses three different rhetorical devices to help get her message across: parallelism, syntax, and rhetorical questions. Examples of parallelism can be seen in a couple of different places.
Cullington’s story is targeting teachers that believe texting is doing harm to students writing. She is mainly targeting the older teachers who do not have great experience with phones. David Carr’s essay reflects very well on the title of his essay, “Keep Your Thumbs Still When I am talking to you”. Carr gives examples that relate to personal examples of how people today are constantly on their phones. By people always being on their phones it has become an act or rudeness towards other people from whom you were speaking to. Instead of keeping your elbows off of the table we will now be told to keep our thumbs still. In addition, similar to my experience at Professor Ataman’s lecture, David Carr discusses his experience at the South by Southwest Interactive Conference, at the conference he found that all the people had some sort of device with a screen that their eyes were attached too.
Communicating with others via texting is as common as eating breakfast in the morning. It has become almost second nature for many to just text friends, family etc. This convenient form of communication created in the 1990’s and popularized in the 2000’s has helped deliver messages and have conversations with almost anyone in the world. Today, texting has become the most widely used communication technique for teenagers and young adults. It is written in completely informal language and it has no literature value in it. Although the critics believe texting is destroying literature value, McWhorter has another opinion in mind. McWhorter thinks that texting is another form of language that is developed by teenagers. For this assignment, I chose to read “Is Google Making Us Stupid?’ by Nicholas Carr and “Does Texting Affect Writing?” by Michaela Cullington. As our world is constantly evolving and technology is getting better we as a society are relying more on convenience. Ever since its creation,texting is a very controversial topic. One of the main claims people have against texting is that “it ruins not only the brains of children using it but it ruins are language”. In “I h8 txt msgs” John Humphry uses his experience with texting to utter the claim that texting is ruining the english language. He states on line 53-57 that the “march of texters” are “doing to our language what Genghis Khan did to his neighbors 800 years ago.

Out of all the Greek gods and goddesses, one of the most powerful Greek goddess who had a huge impact in later time periods and western civilization was Athena. Turkle states that, “the mere presence of a phone on a table between them (two people) or in the periphery of their vision changes both what they talk about and the degree of connection they feel.” While this may be true, along with the other studies on how technology is detrimental to society, there as also positives aspects that contribute to society as well. “It is not about giving our phones but about using them with greater intention” (Turkle). This quote by Turkle embodies how I feel about the technology debate and the more new technology and phones have developed the more we have analyzed whether or not they are good for our society, and at what age kids should use them.
