In the short “The Doll” by Charles Chesnutt, Chesnutt makes the barber human by having him feel compassion when given the opportunity to kill the colonel. The majority of the story takes place in a hotel barber shop where an African American barbers work. One of these barbers named Tom Taylor ends up giving a shave to Colonel Forsyth. Throughout the story it is slowly revealed that Colonel Forsyth is in fact the man who killed Tom’s father which gives Tom the urge to kill him with the straight razor. At the end of the story Tom decides against killingly colonel out of the compassion he feels for others.
“’You clean it,’ Anse says. He don’t look around. Vardaman comes back and picks up the fish. It slides out of his hands, smearing wet dirt onto him, and flops down, dirtying itself again, gapmouthed, goggle-eyed, hiding into the dust like it was ashamed of being dead, like it was in a hurry to get back hid again” (31).
The theme of hardship is illustrated as John, who is the trickster figure, struggles to manifest in his physical and emotional weariness. This is exemplified in the quote, “He looked … worn, beaten and exhausted” (Taylor 323). This statement provides a pitiful depiction of John's physical and emotional state. By presenting John as worn-out and exhausted, the quote highlights the hardships he has endured and emphasizes the resilience required to face and overcome such adversities.
One of the themes from Hernando Tellez 's “Just Lather that 's all” is that different humans have different abilities and capabilities to complete tasks in life. This theme relates to my life because I may think about many actions to fulfill a reaction, but it only goes as far as just a thought, but since life is very lengthy I may get frustrated and do actions without thinking about the consequences. The barber is struggling good and bad within himself, but his goodness overcomes his badness at the end, which shows by him not putting his thoughts into actions. Completion to Admission The barber and Captain Torres have an intense relationship as Torres knows that the barber could kill him at an instant, and the barber knows that he has an opportunity to either be an avenger for his people or a coward murderer. Hernando Tellez keeps the reader interested from the start of the story until the end of the story by developing the characters well and by keeping the plot exciting. Lather and Nothing Else adds a taste of excitement that makes the reader imagine what could happen and how it could turn out to be. Tellez also makes some references to other media and literature like the barber could be related to a novice killer that is nervous and afraid.
In the essay "A Gringo in the Lettuce Fields," Thompson tells us about his errors and reminds us that he is an outsider. I believe the reason for this is because there is so much misconception that immigrants just come to America to take away these jobs from Americans. I also believe that immigrants know that Americans believe this to be true. With that being said, I think his target audience are both Americans and the immigrants doing this type of work. I think there is somewhat of an ignorance when it comes to understanding what this type of work entails and the damage it does to ones body.
Some of the traits that helped Uncle Jed to reach his goal of opening his barber shop was perseverance and determination. Uncle Jed was very perseverant because in the story when it states “Mr. Ernest Walters, a friend of Uncle Jeds. He had come to tell Uncle Jed about the bank failing” then uncle Jed just stood there a long time before he said anything and said he would just have to start all over. When Uncle Jed stayed on track and said that he would just have to start all over that helped him a whole bunch because if he just quit then he never would have gotten his barbershop. The reason i think Uncle Jed was determined because in the story when it states “Uncle Jed kept going around to his customers cutting their hair, even though they couldn 't pay him”.
Faulkner dives deeper into the pressure that Sartoris faced to remain loyal to his father when the family camped for the final night before they expected to arrive at the new home the father had found for them. After dinner, Sarty is called by his father onto the road where his father proceeds to accuse the boy of planning to tell the Justice of the Peace the truth, that his father was the one who burnt the barn down, even though Sartoris had silently made up his mind and was planning on defending him. His father then struck him in the face and with it came the words, "you got to learn to stick to your own blood or you ain 't going to have any blood to stick to you" (par. 28). This line plays a vital role in the creation of the theme, inner conflict, as it further explains the situation that the young boy was in. The father was telling his young son that he needed to be for the family and protect it by defending the lies his father tells or do what Sarty 's heart was telling him to do and cost himself his family, and the people he loved.
In Hernando Tellez’s, “Just Lather, That’s All”, the barber faces a dilemma where he can kill Torres with his razor therefore eliminating his enemy. The barber is secretly a rebel and Captain Torres is the man hunting them down. The barber faces a conflict with himself where he cannot decide whether he should take the opportunity to kill Torres or let him live knowing what he has done to the rebels. The message of the story is to be brave both characters in this story are brave. Torres was brave enough risking his own life to conclude whether the barber would kill him or not, “ They told me that you’d kill me.

It all start when the son’s father asked him to move the sawhorse for him. The sawhorse was blocking the road because the road was closed off due to the snow storm. The moving of the sawhorse can symbolize a transition point for the son because by moving the sawhorse this went against the usual son’s traits. The son’s traits are responsible, cautious, and always thinks ahead, but by moving the sawhorse he commits a reckless act which went against his original ways.
