In the short “The Doll” by Charles Chesnutt, Chesnutt makes the barber human by having him feel compassion when given the opportunity to kill the colonel. The majority of the story takes place in a hotel barber shop where an African American barbers work. One of these barbers named Tom Taylor ends up giving a shave to Colonel Forsyth. Throughout the story it is slowly revealed that Colonel Forsyth is in fact the man who killed Tom’s father which gives Tom the urge to kill him with the straight razor. At the end of the story Tom decides against killingly colonel out of the compassion he feels for others.
In both “Just Lather, That’s All” by Hernando Tellez and “The Painted Door” by Sinclair Ross, the character’s self-control can have an impact on the decisions they make. In both passages, the main character is to deal with the strong temptation to change the status quo. It is brimming with motivation, which inspires them to act their desires. The Barber is a conscientious man.
In “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge”, “The Rocking Horse Winner”, and “I Stand Here Ironing”, all characters have a specific goal. Where they either fulfill their goal, recognize their obstacle and give up, or just fail miserably. But all the characters at least tried to fulfill their goals. “The Rocking Horse Winner”, is very inspiring that a child could recognize his mother’s despair. Even though, she didn’t believe in his method for betting on horses, he believed in his method, and he also believed that he was lucky enough

The book A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier, the main character Ismael Beah tells a story of his first hand account of Sierra Leone’s civil war. Ismael Beah was a boy soldier who went from village to village with his brother and some friends in search of food and shelter. Beah was eventually brainwashed into thinking that what the group was doing would make up for his own family’s death. While his is fighting for the government he is heavily drugged to the point that he believes that what he is doing is the right thing. His lieutenant ended up letting him go with UNICEF so they can have better lives.
Among the Hidden Themes One theme in Among the Hidden is “survival”. This is a theme because when you're a third child you have to know how to survive. You have to hide, or you’ll get caught and killed. Luke hid for so long until one day, when he saw a face in the neighbor's window. This leads us to our second theme of the story.
Unintentional actions can cause awful accidents. This symbolizes how even kind people can be immoral. This concept is exemplified in the story Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck when Lennie doesn’t think through his actions. Another example of this is in Night by Elie Wiesel when the son runs away from his father to survive. Finally, the court case of Menendez v. Terhune the Menendez when they tried to justify the murder of their parents.
Throughout the book, A Long Way Gone Memoirs of a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah, violence is a predominant theme. Ishmael is a witness to violence at the early age of twelve when the civil war reaches his village in Sierra Leone. The death of his family, the loss of his childhood/ innocence and his transformation into a killer were all direct results of the violence due to the war. The rebel forces killed Ishmael’s mother, father, brother and grandparents during the war.
The 1930s was a time in history marked by struggle, instability, and inequality. The novel Of Mice and Men captures the perspective of migrant workers during this time period. Through this perspective, the author, John Steinbeck, paints a vivid story. Using the literary elements of character, symbol, and plot, Steinbeck reveals the theme of how in a society stratified by institutionalized norms, it is inevitable that those not part of the norm will be marginalized, ostracized, and pitted against each other, vying for a sense of power and control. This theme can first be shown through the dynamic between two characters, Crooks and Curley’s Wife.
The motif that motivation was a powerful effect on someone’s decisions on the course of actions they must take. Shakespeare’s play Macbeth demonstrates this idea through the protagonist, Macbeth and his interactions with other characters in order to achieve his goals. When Macbeth was told by the witches that he would be king, Macbeth so an image in his head that was a “horrid image (that) unfix(es) (his) hair” (act 1. scene.iii). The image he saw would be the death of the current king.
The ability to choose which avenue we will take, and weigh the pros and cons of each one, enables us to make a better choice. This alliance come into risk when Chris gets involved with Nola Rice (Scarlett Johansson), an aspiring actress American who gets pregnant and blackmail Chris. Then, he kills the mistress (their son and her neighbor), to not lose his life of privileges.
In the short story, “Lather and Nothing Else”, there are two main opposing forces. On one side there is Captain Torres and on the other is the Barber. Both characters stand for something particular. They act different and think different, but in some ways they also act and think the same. Where there are differences there are also similarities.
The poem Truth, by Gwendolyn Brooks, has a lot of symbolism in it. Different things throughout the poem both represent parts of the Civil Rights movement as well as things that we can relate to our lives today. She did really well with her literary elements used, especially personification. This makes her writing more relatable and realistic in our minds to grasp. Truth is a wonderful poem full of all sorts of different literary elements.
