Could you imagine having a kid practically from the 60’s join your school? The novel that I read last month is called Schooled, by Gordon Korman. The book was about a thirteen year old boy named Capricorn, who’s hippie grandmother, Rain, broke her hip and needed to go to the hospital, leaving Cap with no one to take care of him. May I mention, Cap was homeschooled by his grandmother. So, without someone to teach him or someone to live with, he was forced to go to a public school, Claverage Middle School. Where he was then bullied by the school bully, Zach, for not understanding anything about public schools. Cap was like a newborn, born into a whole new world, filled with technology. Cap and his grandmother, Rain, lived by theirselves on their farm in Garland, Cap had no idea about the outside world. Living with and being raised by a lady from the 60’s sure didn’t help either. One evening, the school bus driver was driving all of the kids and then suddenly had a heart attack. Fortunately Cap was sitting in the front of the bus because Cap was then able to move the passed out bus driver off of the seat and take control of the bus’s steering wheel. He then drove the bus to a hospital where they then took the bus driver away. Cap got severely punished but all of the kids on the bus and off the bus felt bad. They felt bad, first of all because he was being punished for saving the lives of many kids and a bus driver, and second of all because they had picked on him, “Naomi was the first to speak up. ‘Cap didn’t do anything wrong! He was just trying to save Mr. Rodrigo!’” (Korman 76) Capricorn gained much, much respect from this, once he returned back to school.
