The book Comfort by Joyce Moyer Hostetter is the sequel to the book Blue, where 13 year old Ann Fay catches polio after her dad goes off to fight in World War 2. Her little brother also catches polio, but that is fatal. She goes to a hospital, in Hickory, North Carolina, and meets Imogene, a African American girl with polio too. Imogene helps Ann Fay get through the pain, and they become good friends. Comfort picks up right where Blue left off, where Ann Fay is home from the hospital and Ann Fay’s daddy is home from the war.
Rose’s Run by Dawn Dumont is an excellent book that is about a character named Rose Okanese who has to tackle many life problems after her husband cheats on her as well as leaves her and her two daughters. This book takes place in a reserve located in Saskatchewan in modern day Canada. The author did a fantastic job at describing every little detail in the scenes which really helps the reader imagine what was in the setting. One good example of a description is “Rose stood on her front steps looking at the moody sky. Nightfall was coming on and she was dreading it....

However, the experiences each character encounters along the way leads them down a different path that is not at all what Nathan Price as a husband and father instills in them to believe. Over time in the Belgian Congo, the girls and their mother are able to see that there are divergent options for their lives other than what their dictator, Nathan is preaching to them. Leah begins the book as a little girl who follows in her father’s footsteps, she craves his approval.
The author, Sarah B. Pomeroy, writes this book in a style that resembles a textbook with many examples. She structures it in a timeline chronologically telling the events and breaking up the subject matter. The book lacked personality, although she had strong opinions that came through when writing the book, the style of writing lacked personality and was hard to read at times. The subject matter I found very interesting, considering it correlated with my class currently. At times, while I read this book, I found myself angry with men because of their brutal and thoughtfulness of women.
