In the short story “Lather and Nothing Else,” by Hernando Tellez, the barber is faced with a difficult decision. The story begins with a barber working in his shop when when Captain Torres enters asking for a shave. The barber quickly became nervous at the sight of Torres, since he had slaughtered many of his allies. For the barber was a revolutionary and Torres happened to be on the side of the existing regime. However the Captain was not aware of the opposite beliefs of one another. With this in mind the barber has to face a difficult decision. The barber will not kill Captain Torres.
One of the reasons why the barber will not kill Captain Torres is he won’t be able to hide what he has done so he would have to leave quickly. “From his throat a stream of blood would flow on the sheet, over the chair, down my hands, onto the floor. I would have to close the door. But the blood would go flowing along the floor, warm, indelible, not to be staunched, until it reach the street like a small scarlet river,”(Tellez 4). This is a

“It was a secret shared by very few, just because that made it possible for me to inform the revolutionaries about Torres’s activities in the town and what he planned to do every time he went on one of his raids to hunt down rebels.”(Tellez 3). This shows the barber isn’t going to kill Torres because the barber will have to give up to many things. First he will always and furthermore be running from the regime. Second he will lose his barber shop which is like home to him. The barber will give up everything he’s worked for and the pride of being the best barber in town. Finally he will no longer be a spy for the revolutionaries. This will be tough for the rebels top lose a man from the inside telling them when and where attacks may be. Overall the losses would be too great for the barber and won’t bring himself to kill Captain
