This destroys Mattie 's world. Mattie and her grandfather flees the city. To soon find out that the sickness is everywhere. she tries to figure out how to survive. Many people died not many survived because back then they didn 't have medicine to cure it like today u can get shots to help fight off bad sickness.
How can somebody be both a child and an adult? In Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson, the protagonist, Matilda Cook, proves that a girl as young as fourteen years of age can appear so similar to a person who is fully grown-up. Matilda, also referred to as Mattie, is living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the time the novel takes place, in 1793. At this point in history, a disaster was going on in that town: Yellow Fever. Doctors tried bleeding people, feeding them herbal medicines, and anything they could in attempt to cure the ill.
The second part of the novel was intriguing to me because the book explained how the patients were diagnosed. Usually when the doctor came to the patient's home, after a few checks, they would diagnose the patient had yellow fever although they only had a minor summer grippe of a type of fever. This was mainly shown when a doctor came to diagnose Lucille and immediately said she had yellow fever. The main reason this was done was because the doctors thought that disease was spread through smell or by refugees who lived by the river instead of understanding that the disease was spread by mosquitoes. The main characters in this part of the novel were Mrs. Flagg, Dr. Deveze, Grandpa, and Matilda.
Betty Parris, Abigail Williams, and Ann Putnam had illnesses that the a doctor just couldn't be explain. The girls would cry, fall down, and have fits. They first accused a slave named Tituba, said that a man came to her and told her to sign a book. Authorities believed that it was the Devil himself that told Tituba to follow his orders. In March, they accused Martha Corey, a well respected citizen of the community.
The children made massive efforts to leave Welch and the family. They were determined to not end up like their parents. Jeanette wanted to start being accepted by people, she wanted to be like everyone else. In this following quote is shows the new values Jeanette has adopted of wanting a better life, “ I was convinced that people might be more accepting of us if we made an effort to improve the way 93 Little Hobart street looked. “ , “ I had been counting on mom and dad to get us out, but I knew I had to do it on my own.”

If you had a despicable case of yellow fever you had the choice of a French doctor or an American doctor to treat you. Yellow fever came to Philadelphia by foreign ships.
The parents of Lori, Jeannette, Brian and Maureen are irresponsible. The kids have grown up without independence because they have been stuck in a life they did not choose. Sometimes it is hard for their parents to provide food and shelter for them. Their parents always say they are moving again, and the kids cannot do anything about it, but accept it. However, what their parents did teach them, was how to be smart people.

During this harsh period, Ms. Franks daughter Anne stayed her hyper, playful self. First off Anne comes into this situation with a positive attitude. Anne Frank sees the good in almost anything and anyone. Almost evryone in the atic was botherd by Anne.

Throughout her journey, she catches the fever, helps an orphaned girl, uses her house to save lives, and starts up her coffeehouse again after it was shut down. The yellow fever epidemic of 1793 changed Matilda Cook from an unproductive teenager to a responsible young adult.
Life was hard at the Cook’s Coffeehouse, there was little to no supplies left to cook with, and little to no food for ourselves. At one point we ran out of food so we had to close the coffeehouse which made it harder to live since we were no longer making any money. The word of fever spread through town quickly as there there were many deaths to an unknown miasma. There has been rumors spread all across town that Yellow Fever has come back, and they say it is coming from the refugees that are coming in from the colonies.
