Pills & Potions Love is not something that can be cured by medicine. It is not something that can be controlled. In, Love Medicine by Louise Erdrich, the story follows five different families that intertwine because of marriages and love affairs. The story contains unanswered mysteries, supernatural mishaps, mournful deaths, and alluring love triangles. The book has very powerful themes but lacks a lot of extremely important parts of a good fiction novel.
The story jumps between the past of 1930s and the characters present of 1980s. It takes place on the Chippewa reservation in North Dakota. The book follows these families stories and shows how everyone is connected. It also shows how everything the parents have do affect their children in some way. The first section of the story is assumed as June Kashpaw’s last day on earth. It also ends with one of her children reflecting on there mom and dad. For one,the story changes point of views so often that it becomes confusing and tiresome. It is hard to connect with any of the characters because the person who is telling the story changes every chapter, and there are a lot of main characters. So many, in fact, that it becomes hard to keep up with all of them without a character map accessible at all times. The point of view also changes from first person to limited third person randomly with no consistency. Sometimes another character will even tell someone else's story which is also extremely disorienting. Another big weakness is the plot line. The book is not clear on any rising action and climax of the story. Because of the point of views in the story it is hard to make a true plot line as a whole. The plot line seems rather dry and flat considering the obstacles the characters have to face. Overall the plot and the point of views were detrimental to the
