In the beginning, Melody explains how tired she is of being disabled. Melody cannot talk, move, or really do anything on her own. She can use her thumbs, but that’s about it. Melody has a very hard time in school. People call her different, retarded, stupid. But, Melody is actually very smart. She wouldn’t need any help if she could move and talk. People think she’s dumb because she needs special help. She hates it. Towards the middle of the book, Melody starts to think about ways she could communicate. She sees a computer. She names it Elvira. Melody has never had the chance to say the simple words, “I love you.” She makes Elvira say it, and her mom cries. Her dad got it all on tape. It was time to go to school. Nothing. Melody did not want to go to school. It was raining, and her mom was having such a hard time. She left the door open while bringing Melody to the car. Melody started screaming, and all of a sudden, her mom ran over her little sister, Penny. The next day, Melody dealt with everyone at school. They offered her the trophy, and Melody did not want it. She didn’t want a trophy for some event she didn’t even participate in. Melody smashes the cheap, plastic, ninth place trophy on the ground, and tells them they deserve it. Catherine then rolls her out of the room leaving the kids in disbelief.
