As the 2016 Presidential election comes to a close, the political campaigns are getting nasty and bitter. The media is at the top of the list to blame for this type of campaign. In reading the book “Out of Order” by Thomas Patterson, I would say that this book needs to be rewritten because of the political climate we have in the United States today. However, for the time Patterson wrote this book, it was a real eye opener on how the media will try to influence the vote. Patterson calls it the schema, or the “game”. Articles about campaigns focus on the "horse race," or the constant jockeying between candidates and their campaigns, rather than on the actual platforms of the candidates or the important issues being discussed. 1.The thesis of …show more content…

Although the books strength lies in the evidence Patterson spells out about the media becoming too involved in the election process. The weakness that I see the book lacks is the evidence that the constituents are getting not as much involved in politics reach results in the media selection of the nominee. As a result, the book gave a one sided story about how the media shaped the political campaigns of presidential nominees. I would like to have seen the correlation between the media, and the people of the United States. How did the media affect the low information voter? On the one hand of weakness, Patterson shows a lot of strength on the other hand. It is well known, or well covered up that the media has been deteriorated over the past couple election cycles. Thomas Patterson puts the whole media’s involvement with the whole election process as what he calls a “game”. Generally speaking the political jockeying and strategizing of the presidential candidates. Patterson displays that the “good news” articles are vanishing, and more of the “bad” news articles are growing very year. The gap amongst the media and the public has grown more apart since the 1960’s. Media now will report on interpretive reporting instead of concentrating on the real issues. As a result the media will distort the issues by focusing on the controversy. Certainly Thomas Patterson has made a significant contribution to his area of study. As a Harvard professor at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Patterson talks about the need to change journalism altogether. He has written a few books on the subject of media like Out of Order, and Informing the News: The Need for Knowledge-Based Journalism his latest addition to his writing career. Additionally, Patterson has written about the vanishing electoral participation in the United States in the Vanishing Voter.
