Manny and Me In the novel Parrot in the Oven. Victor Martinez introduces the Hernandez family. There is some drama and even some hate to spark your mind while reading. Manny’s narrative in Parrot in the Oven is relatable because we both have family issues, don’t feel like we belong, and last but not least changes in our financial situations.
One thing that me and Manny relate to is family. How there is always something bad , or something maybe even good going on. Manny and I both have a pretty weird family set up. For Manny, his dad got sent to jail. But for me, instead of my dad getting sent to jail, he moved far away, so me and my sister never get to see him. A quote from the book is,”I’m so sorry then Mr. Hernandez,” he said, “we’re going to have to take you in for possession of an illegal firearm” (Martinez 67). Money is very hard for Manny to earn. It’s the same with me, there’s nothing I can do to earn a quick 10 dollars for lunch or something like that. What Manny does to overcome this hard time is he works very hard at everything. That’s what I need to start doing as well so that I can be somewhat happy! An example for one of the reasons the Hernandez family doesn’t have any money is by cause of Mr. Hernandez always spending money on beer. “Rico’s pool hall was dad’s favorite place in the whole world”(Martinez 21). As I explained before, Mr. Hernandez is one of the reasons they are all broke, by virtue of him only spending money on beer and cigarettes. This relates to me by not having enough money to live a somewhat happy life. Recently my parents have got a divorce, so it’s been pretty difficult to think straight or to get enough money to pay for new school clothes or groceries so we can eat. .
