At first glance, I witnessed the deep, concentrated red in the left corner of the painting of Patrick Campbell’s artwork. I immediately saw the red dripping down to show the people hanging on the seven stripes on the American Flag. It appears that two of the bodies hanging are women, three are men, and one is a young child. The stripes on the red also have little splats of a darker red down them. The white stripes are completely clean, no red dripping just crisp, white lines with nothing inside of them besides a little bit of the bodies, hanging over. Then, after taking a deeper look at the stars, soldiers appeared with guns. A few of them don’t have guns and appear to be surrendering to the soldiers with guns. Last year, 1,091 cases of unarmed murders of African Americans by police. Racism, recently, has been called out in many protests of the unarmed murders. Big groups like Black Lives Matter have broken out to call America on it’s racism and stand against the innocent souls being murdered. For this reason, the people kneeling in the stars could represent the unarmed African Americans targeted by police. Alton Sterling, a father, last May was killed by two police officers. Alton was selling CDs on the street when two cops appeared. One officer pinned Alton down and the other cop pulled out a gun. There went the father of five for simply selling CDs. Many colored citizens have died in story similar to this. Just like in the paint, people are surrendering to the police but unnecessary violence occurs. “Hands up. Don’t shoot.” a sentence used in protest the deaths of innocent. The men in the stars on their knees are the African Americans with their backs turned from the police point guns at them, hoping they won’t meet their death
