The over-reliance on one person to make decisions for an entire city results in heavy corruption and poor city planning. Initiatives are quickly approved and put into action with a strong mayor who can make city-wide policies, but there is plenty of room for corruption within this system. With more representation from communities dispersed across the city, there are more compromises and discussions that ensue within municipal decisions, but the increased amount of feedback from communities with different interests can ensure that the perceived best option is being pursued. Furthermore, the proper education of how an individual’s municipal government is structured will increase the transparency and accountability of a government because citizens would be able to trace where the decisions are being made more accurately instead of merely blaming the figure-head of their community. Citizen’s could learn about their municipal government through disseminated pamphlets, as well as online on the city government website through concise, plain language descriptions of various

Many wish that the government bureaucracy could be run like that of a large company's. Goodsell argues that this is naive ideology; comparing government bureaucracy that of Google's is akin to comparing apples and oranges. Their purposes are so vastly different that they have to operate in different manners (Goodsell 2004, 1166). Bureaucracies may not always radically be changing operations in an effort towards improving, but it is difficult to steer a ship that organizes processes for hundreds of millions of people. By maintaining a status quo, one that can be argued is one of the highest standards of living in the world, government bureaucracies complete their mission each and every day.
Since 1789, the founding and ratification of the original thirteen state constitution of the United States has revolutionized its government in order to protect its citizens as new advancements are made to benefit inhabitants of the recent New World. Since then the constitution was amended in order to gratify the needs of the people. Throughout the paradigm shift on the ideal of government, it is crucial to expound any modifications by means of bureaucracy. One of the difficulties of the shift that is directed toward the 21st century is the understanding the transition of improved government and its benefits for the delivery of human services. The government uses power, democracy, and politics to exercise their control by establishing new laws,
The history of Canadian public administration over the years also plays a crucial role in the system. The Canadian public administration system was initially based on the British government system but has since then transformed into a system that is unique to the country (Drysdale, p.37). That interplay evolution made an independent system for Canada, and is a “result of Canada’s political culture, and the need for public administration to adapt over time, while upholding the principles of democracy” (Drysdale, 37). Therefore, the very reason the new Canadian public administration system came to be is because of the interplay of democracy and political culture, which is arguably the greatest influence it has had. The current system in place
Public-sector personnel systems contain three key elements: strong executive leadership, political neutrality, and a balanced demographic composition; combining these three key elements creates a noticeable difference from their private sector counterparts. First, strong executive leadership plays a key role in the success or failure of the bureaucracy and thus becomes a key element in the personnel system in the public sector. In order to differentiate the executive leadership,
Oakland City Introduction Public administration entails the execution of government policy. The Democratic and Bureaucratic Responsibilities of Public Administration Burke (1989) centrally focused on the dilemmas faced by public administrators as they attempt to execute bureaucratic responsibilities within a democratic system. He highlighted the tension public administrators face in reconciling democracy and bureaucracy and proposed that they execute their responsibilities from a democratic process-based approach and analyze moral dilemmas using political and institutional rather than solely moral methods of analysis (Burke, 1989). Burke (1989) presented three essential questions that he believed one must address to ascertain proper bureaucratic responsibilities: (1) What is the connection of bureaucratic responsibility to the perspective that proper conduct primarily pertains to issues of morality and ethics; (2) If predicaments of bureaucratic conduct cannot be chiefly solved through the appeal to moral values, then upon what rules of conduct should a theory of bureaucratic responsibility reside; and (3) What dilemmas arise when executing bureaucratic responsibilities, particularly within complex organizations? Woodrow Wilson, the twenty-eighth President of the United States, is well renowned for many accomplishments; of particular importance is being credited as the father of Public Administration. Although he argues for many different ideas and concepts, his end goal is always for the benefit of the people. This particularly resonates in his 1887 essay; The Study of Administration. In his critically renowned essay, The Study of Administration, he details his concepts of and for public administration.
Some of these criticisms of traditional models of administration included: large scale government resulting in overconsumption of resources; government involvement in too many activities; widespread bureaucracy; high rates of inflation; the absence of separation between policy and administration; the absence of rational decision making; and disregard for citizens’ satisfaction. The model was also criticized for being characterized by inefficiency, corruption, lack of accountability and inflexibility. These harsh criticisms helped in the rapid emergence of a new model, New Public Management (NPM). After that,
The intent of this criticism is not to point the many flaws of bureaucracy, rather to better improve upon it. I believe its important to first establish that not all public bureaucracies can be seen as dysfunctional just because one is. An example of this provided by Knott and Miller is that when the New York City Police Department found corruption in its vice department, it didn’t mean that all police officials were a suspect of the case (Knott & Miller, 1987, p. 118). Furthermore, in the United States, most interactions with local bureaucracies are fairly present. A study presented by Knott and Miller from 1963 presents that Americans feel much more equal treatment from bureaucracy in comparison to other parts in the world.
It is perhaps opportunely that our government is able to push through boundaries and traditions to come up with resolutions and better policies/laws. All this time, the Philippine Economy has been deemed to have strong growth hindered by political uncertainties. This is so true. We have a potential to be great and yet we still move slow towards our development and sustainability. Our country has its own strengths and weaknesses that affect positively and/or negatively our over-all status.
