In the book Pop, by Gordon Korman, the main character Marcus Gordon is new to the town. This football practitioner receives help from a former NFL linebacker, Charlie Popovich. The King of Pop teaches the rookie how to tackle hard and the fact why a 50 plus year NFL expert is helping a teenager with practice intrigues him. Along with some odd actions of Charlie's, Marcus does some research and results in learning that Charlie has Alzheimer's disease. Knowing that his poor friend cannot fend for himself, Marcus starts to do what is good for the linebacker, not caring about all the trouble he tackles along the way. Over the course of the story, Marcus realizes that true friendship is a result of understanding the needs of a companion.

The Popovich family do not want Charlie to attend the induction because of his disease, even though they know he will be honored. This was because they think that someone will notice things wrong about Charlie. Even worse, word will spread. Marcus knew that he could have minded his own business. But Marcus thinks about what Charlie would do if he were the true himself. He decides that "It was reckless and stupid-and totally the right thing to do. This was because Marcus decides that Charlie would totally choose to attend the ceremony if he were to be free of the disease. He was also considering that he deserves to be inducted into EBU's hall of fame for the hard work he had done. So, Marcus chooses to take Charlie there himself with only the help of Charlie’s old friend James McTavish. Even though Marcus gets very close to getting arrested after the ceremony for abducting a person, he does not care, thinking that it was merely an act to show care towards a suffering
