In this extremely controversial work, Glenn C. Altschuler takes aim on the government’s accusations, the prejudice from the police, and the affect that rock ’n’ roll made in America through the late forties and fifties. Glenn makes many accusations of his own through the way he shifts the momentum of the story from time to time. Through the years back then and now, music has caused many racial and gender controversies. In this book, Glenn explains all these problems and what rock did to start or get of them.

Altschuler discusses media commentator Jeff Greenfield’s opinion about the influences of Rock and Roll on American youth. Greenfield states, “Nothing we see in the counterculture [of the 1960’s], not the clothes, the hair, the sexuality, the drugs, the rejection of the reason, the resort to symbols and magic – none of it is separable from the coming to power in the 1950s of rock and roll music.” He continues with “Brewed in the hidden corners of black American cities, its [Rock-n-Roll] rhythms infected white Americans, seducing them out of the kind of temperate bobby-sox passions out of which Andy Hardy films are spun. Rock and Roll was elemental, savage, dripping with sex; it was just as our parents feared.” (Altschuler, 8) Rock and Roll stood as a powerful alternative to the conformist ideals Americans had valued.

In this paper, I will argue that Hendrix 's cover of Dylan 's "All along the watchtower," thanks to its lyrics and sound dynamic, optimally conveys his anti-war and anti-violence beliefs.
Music has had an influence on the lives of many around the world. The tempo, the beat and the rhythm wraps around the ears and hearts of people and teaches them things they have never known before. Not only is music teaching lessons but grabbing the emotional attention of its listeners. In the song Glory performed by music artist John Legend and Command, the song is depicting an issue towards black people across the nation started during the Jim Crow Laws in the south. As far back as humans have studied, music has been one of the ultimate symbols of time. Instruments and music compositions have shown historians how people were living and the struggles they faced. Even the song “Yankee Doodle” possessed historical significance, providing a deeper and almost comical understanding of the tension between the British and the Americans during the American revolution. In the mid 1900s, artists such as Aretha Franklin, Billie Holiday, and Mahalia Jackson sang songs relating to gender discrimination, racism, and social justice in America during the Civil Rights Movement. But, in the late sixties Rock n Roll, commonly reckoned as the golden age of rock and roll when it attained a maturity unimaginable for the delinquent rebellion of the fifties, there are numerous references to the Vietnam War. The criticism of the war is submerged in or displaced by the politics of sexuality, lifestyle, and drugs. Rock music of that time period celebrated anti-materialism, spiritual awakening and social disengagement (James pg 133). Like the social movement it made possible, hippie music was ideologically and economically assimilable.
Music is the most significant of symbols in Oates short story to the point that it is dedicated to Bob Dylan. In the reading for today, Waksman discusses the relevance of Jimmy Hendrix to the Black Arts Movement and the importance of Hendrix being an African-American performer at a time when race relations were still highly tense within the United States. Waksman touches upon the interesting point of whether viewing Hendrix as an essential part of the Black Arts Movement is really appropriate. On the one hand, acknowledging and celebrating the fact that many of the most important musical artists from the birth of popular music onwards were African-American prevents the arts from being seen as a purely white domain, rightfully demonstrating to the world that black people were equally as capable and talented. If there is something to be changed in this world, then it can only happen through music.” A generation which was earnestly devoted to peace, protest, and revolution, the counterculture amongst the 1960’s yearned for change. Rock and roll was far beyond just a genre of music; it influenced lifestyles, protests, and attitudes, thus, kindling an awakening in the youth of American culture. The distinction between parental and youth culture was a persistent root of concern, considering that teens throughout the world found a sense of belonging in this style of music.
Music is not only used to capture peoples hearing but it is used to power peoples minds through the power of an individuals voice. Music served a critical role in the African American’s lives, as it was used to uplift their spirits as well as providing them with hope and strength to fight for civil rights and overcome segregation between white superiority and the unfair treatment of the inferior black. Music was defined as the voice of the people that lived through the oppression of the civil rights movement. During the civil rights movement, there were many different types of music genres sung, dependent on the culture, this included spiritual music; gospel and even folk music, which was performed by musicians, singers and even people of any musical talents. Through this, it brought about the uniting of people to join together and sing songs that helped them go through the oppression of the civil rights movement.
In conducting our research, we discovered that modern poetry originates in North America, United States to be more specific. Even though these poets were spoken word poets, their poetry was resistance poetry and an expression of rebellion. As we noted before that the origins of this contemporary form of performance poetry is found in oral tradition of African Americans, the descendants of the African slaves. We also discovered that the poets of the 1950s and 1970s used their poetry as a voice to express the needs of the black American people. Contemporary spoken word poetry started in America, in the 1950s as an underground political movement.
