The satisfaction people take in their greedy actions based on evilness and revenge illustrate the darker sides of human nature. In the novel Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier, the author demonstrates the ideas of manipulation, jealousy, and emotional stress. These dominant topics reflect the way the characters are portrayed and the way the characters treat one another. The undefined narrator is able to walk us through her life reminiscing on the most critical and disturbing challenges she is faced with. A specific part of the novel that stood out to me as being a manipulative environment was the party scene. Mrs. Danvers asks the narrator “why don't you copy one of the paintings in the gallery” (1988). This leaves the narrator feeling a sense of happiness but also leaves the readers considering if Mrs. Danvers is actually finally doing something good for her. DuMaurier is able to manipulate the readers into believing the dress would be a good thing to wear, while in reality it would ruin the whole party. The white dress symbolizes the gender and social roles in this novel. The narrator wears this gown because she believes it's the way she will fit into her new life. It also symbolizes her efforts to replace Rebecca, wanting Manderly and all that live there to forget about Rebecca. After the dress is put on by the narrator, we see a roar in Maxims’ tone of being controlling and manipulative.
