Rhetorical devices give speeches and works of literature a way that can convey feelings or ideas to a viewer. When addressing during times of war or chaos, people such as Ronald Reagan, Abraham Lincoln, and Winston Churchill used these terms to better connect with their audience. Without these tools of the english language, dialogue and literature would be all the more dull and unappealing. However, with these useful instruments, writers and speakers can better communicate through some of the many rhetorical devices.
Jack Nguyen AP English 3 30, July 2015 Nickel and Dimed Rhetorical Strategies and Notes Thesis: Ehrenreich’s personal use of varied rhetorical strategies allowed her to divulge the working conditions and struggles of the poverty-stricken class to the readers in order to provoke them to realize that something has to be done about poverty.. First Body: What: Allusion Pg. 2, Logos Pg. 37. How & Effect: Ehrenreich uses these personal, rhetorical strategies based on her experiences as a low-wage worker in the poor working class. The effect is that Ehrenreich is able to show the readers the conditions in which the impoverished work in and the daily obstacles that they face in life; also there is an appeal to logic and a reference of a poverty idiom. Why: Ehrenreich is deliberately using these rhetorical strategies to incite the readers about the fact that changes need to be done to poverty because it is a detrimental thing to society.
In this article, I sensed some rhetorical strategies used. For example, Carr explains that he wasn 't the only one experiencing the problem of not being able to concentrate on his readings. His acquaintances, impressive bloggers, and friends also claims to have the literary types—struggles for fighting to stay focused on long pieces of writings. However, just proving this point won’t solve anything, so Carr points out rhetorical techniques like logos.

He discussed the shooting that took place in Arizona over a political issue of immigration in which Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was killed. Thornburgh said that the over-exaggeration n that was places on the “issues” that were going on in Arizona is the reason people got angry enough and why it drove Jared Loughner, the shooter, to act out in a violent way (53).
Throughout the reading by Gloria Anzaldua, we as readers, get to view the way she lived and to relate with the text. Gloria was born in Rio Grande Valley of South Texas in 1942. When Gloria was at a young age, she was shamed and embarrassed for the way her voice sounded. Growing up, she was told, “If you want to be American, speak American, if you do not like it, go back to Mexico where you belong” (Anzaldua 2). When she was told this it made her very upset.
Past leaders such as Andrew Jackson, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Marc Antony are evidence that society does not reward morality and good character in leadership. Society is drawn to leaders that have good rhetoric, propaganda, and charismatic personalities, and society supports them despite their immorality. Society is concerned about stability more than the morality of their leaders and will support immoral leaders in times of crisis to provide stability. In history there have been multiple leaders that have used rhetoric, propaganda and charismatic personalities to gain power, despite their morals.
Rhetoric is a discipline concerned with the effective use of language. It is considered as an art that aims to improve the capability of writers or speakers to inform, give pleasure, persuade, motivate, and so on. Rhetoric typically provides insight for understanding, discovering and developing arguments for particular situations. As Plato poetically put it, rhetoric is the “art of enchanting the soul”. It has played a central role in many long existing fields including literature, linguistics and politics.
Strengths and Weaknesses In my rhetorical strategies essays I need to notice more on the prompt, choose better examples, deepen and extend my analyses, and set up my examples more. On the passage, I need to mark more on the paragraphs and annotate in the margins more. Doing this will help me to use better examples in my essay and write stronger analyses.
“These children may struggle with ideas of perfection, eating disorders, and body image in their adulthood. Pageants send a message that looks and appearance are more important than brains and education.” (Children Beauty Give Children Unrealistic Expectations) Children will struggle with their body images and most importantly, they will put appearance first that education. “Additionally, dressing children up with adult clothes and makeup appeals to sexual predators, placing them at risk of falling victim to a pedophile.”
Beauty Pageants deprive children of their confidence and childhoods because they lower girls self esteem. In today 's society, many magazines, movies, and runways pressure women to look a certain way, and to act a certain way. Young girls, even girls as young as one years old, can be affected by today’s obsession with fitness and perfection. These girls can take drastic measures to change what they look like, even going as far as starving themselves (Freymark 29). Beauty pageants are notorious for highlighting outward looks,and to many girls who believe that they are not beautiful enough, being judged on one 's appearance can cause a devastating blow to a girl’s confidence.

Despite popular opinion, beauty pageants can be more than a popularity contest.
