I am reading “The Bass, The River, and Sheila Mant” by W.D Wetherell, and I am on page 5. This short story is about a boy, the narrator, that has a crush on a girl, Sheila Mant. He learns little details about her as he observes and analysis her. As the summer goes on, he finally makes the decision to ask her out on a date, soon he would face a challenge that, at that time, must have been the hardest decision he’s ever had to make. Being compelled to choose between getting the girl, or catching a bass that would have been considered the biggest catch.

Francis Chan once wrote, "True love is about sacrifice for the sake of the ones you love." This quotation is base on the bible verse 1 John 3:16, which says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Indeed true love comes with a sacrifice. Walter Wetherell’s short story “The Bass, the River, and Sheila Mant” is a good example of a love sacrifice in which a fourteen-year-old boy who is in love with his sixteen-year-old neighbor, Sheila Mant. He has a serious crush on her and is thrilled when she accepts his offer of a date.

On the Rainy River Analysis One of the most compelling books I’ve read is The Things They Carried. This book is filled with many short stories of the Vietnam war. The Author tells the story from the perspective of the soldiers. This books shows us the sacrifice these men had to give for are freedom. The Things They Carried has many great stories by Tim O’brien, but On The Rainy River was my favorite and seemed to follow the psychological literary lens.
In Tim O'brien's “On the Rainy River” it is the story about a man who has been conscripted to go the vietnam war, a war which he himself does not believe in due to the fact that he believes “when a nation goes to war it must have reasonable confidence in the justice and imperative of its cause” by saying this I can see that he is against death and has a negative approach towards the idea of a war. Later on in the story he says “I was a coward. I went to the war. ”(pg.173) I disagree with the statement he made saying “I was a coward.

I stood in the bleak frosted air as Jim prepared to leave on his trip into Chester, the nearest city to our small town of River Grove. Silence filled the biting air, for it took much energy to speak on that cold January morning. Jim turned to me, solemnly staring into my eyes. His breath stained the thick air in front of him with a white cloud as he finally opened his mouth to speak.
