Caleb Thigpen 8 ELA Mr. Hooker 3/8/2024 Billy Sunday Through the book of “Billy Sunday” by Dick Bobnick we find the account of one of the greatest evangelists in American history. Billy started out struggling and was an orphan, but still continued to work hard and eventually got into baseball. Billy then transitioned from baseball into preaching and then he started to help on crusades and eventually started even hosting crusades. Billy Sunday was a steadfast evangelist who overcame many obstacles to spread the gospel through his personality, lifestyle, and passion for Christ. Billy Sunday was able to more easily spread the Gospel because of his personality. He had a system of core beliefs that he preached on, whether the crowd liked it or not. …show more content…

Even though he was a great baseball player and a big time evangelist, he was humble. Billy never boasted to the press about his successful crusades or got dressed up for the camera. He just stayed faithful and listened to God’s calling, even though he would be rich continuing to play baseball. Billy Sunday had a great personality but to really understand how he developed his personality you must know his home life. Billy Sunday’s lifestyle was the key to his success in spreading the gospel. When Billy Sunday was just a small kid, his father died in the war against the north and south. His mom married twice to try to give the kids a father figure, but both were drinkers and her and her children. Since he never had a father that supported the family, he had to be a hard worker and help support his family with his brother. Eventually, Billy had to go to an orphan home with his older brother. When he got old enough, he and his brother left the orphanage and came back to be united with his mom once again as she had regained some financial stability. When Billy Sunday was an adult, his home life was almost polar opposite to his young home
