“Every word, facial expression, gesture, or action on the part of a parent gives the child some message about self-worth. It is sad that so many parents do not realize the message they are sending,” once said the American writer and therapist Virginia Satir. Sandra Cisneros, a Mexican-American author, addresses this topic in her article Only Daughter. Throughout the passage, she opens up and expresses how she struggled to get her dad’s acceptance during her childhood, and how the appalling experience shaped her personality. Personally, I consider the reading relatable due to the way I was treated during my childhood. In retrospect, although I do realize my parents were simply doing what they thought was the best for my brother and me, I can agree with the mindset held by Virginia Satir; whatever a parent does or, on the other hand, doesn’t do, can, and more than likely will, have a long-term effect on their children’s behavior. …show more content…
