In “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst, the narrator is an abuser to his younger brother Doodle. For example, a few weeks before school was to begin, Doodle experiences sleepless nights and wakes up crying from nightmares as a result of his brother’s goal to teach Doodle to walk. It is understandable to try and have Doodle learn to walk day by day, but the stress Doodle is under to please his brother shows how the narrator puts his own pride above Doodle’s well-being. Considering that the narrator doesn’t take Doodle’s responses to his activities into account as he teaches, the narrator knows no boundaries as to what is helpful and what is treated as abuse. They fight alot but truly love each other and will help them even if it's because they are embarrassed of them. This is in essence the story of Doodle and his brother, the narrator, in James Hurst’s short story, “The Scarlet Ibis”. In the end of the story Doodle ends up dying and through the use of symbolism and imagery.
The short story, “The Scarlet Ibis” was written by James Hurst. The author uses several literary devices to help the reader uncover the struggles faced by Doodle throughout his short childhood. Born with physical disabilities, Doodle has to face many challenges that limited his mobility. With the help of his brother, Doodle was able to overcome many of these obstacles. However, despite his accomplishments, Doodle’s life is ultimately cut short by his frailties.
In the story, The Scarlet Ibis, Doodles brother is responsible his death. He was born with many birth defects and wasn't normal. Doodle wanted a brother that could do anything. Doodle had a older brother that was 6 when he was born. Doodles brother is responsible for the death for these reasons:he was embarrassed by doodles conditions,he learned techniques that wasn't good for the heart,and mistreated throughout the story.

The Couraging Brother Sometimes people feel the need to give up on themselves or others after failing to achieve a goal. In “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst, Doodle’s big brother has no confidence or hope in what Doodle, his challenged brother, could do. Throughout this story, Doodle and the narrator never give up no matter how hard the obstacles were to overcome. When Doodle was born, everyone had their doubts. Doodle’s family knew that they were going to struggle once Doodle entered the family.
“Brother” is pretty cruel and mean so I hold him accountable for the death of Doodle (William Armstrong). Some of these reasons why I think so is that he abandoned him in the forest, he didn’t care if he was leaving him behind, and he wasn’t going to help him home at all. To start it all off his “Brother” left his only sibling in the forest. On page 6 paragraph 1 or 2 is says “After we had drifted a long way, I put the oars in place and made Doodle row back against the tide.” The reason I think this is because he was making Doodle row both of them against the tide
Two brothers create a special bond but later learn it is not that way. “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst is a story that contains the main character, Brother, and his little brother, Doodle, who struggles physically. Throughout the story Doodle was put to the test by brother physically and sometimes emotionally. Brother did this in pride and learned that pride led to Doodle's Death. The author conveys the feeling of desolation and it is shown by point of view, character dialogue, character actions.
The Complex Relationship between Brother and Doodle Pride, will always be the longest distance between two people, the reason of betrayal, and even death. In the Scarlet Ibis, James Hurst describes Brother as a slave of pride unable to establish a real relationship with Doodle. The Scarlet Ibis, narrates the complex relationship between the narrator and his physically ill brother Doodle. Pride always invades the weak bond between the two brothers and leads them to a tragic end.
The Scarlet Ibis How did Doodle die? Why did Doodle die? Was it his Brother? Doodle was born a disabled kid who was loved by everybody in his family except his brother (The narrator of this story). The narrator wished for a perfect brother that his would be able to do things with but when he wasn’t given that it caused him to do things that no brother should ever do or think about doing to his younger brother.

The narrator’s pride wants Doodle to be an ordinary brother, and kills him in the strive for perfection. “For a long time, it seemed forever, I lay there crying, sheltering my fallen scarlet ibis,” the narrator reveals (426). For the first time, the narrator notices the connection between the scarlet ibis and Doodle. When Doodle dies, his neck is twisted identical to the scarlet ibis’ neck as it dies under the bleeding tree, along with the fact that they are both weak and fragile. The scarlet ibis and Doodle has come a long way, dodging many obstacles and achieving many goals, but in the end, both fall short of
In The Scarlet Ibis, the author revealed finally the real feelings of Brother toward his brother Doodle. During the whole incidents of the short story, Brother is not accepting Doodle as a brother because of the abnormality which Doodle suffered from and so Brother feels ashamed. The last scene in the short story is so tragic. The scene is portrayed as Brother returned back to Doodle who was found dead, having bled from the mouth and his neck is covered in blood. The act of crying and screaming by Brother for the death of his brother Doodle is a pure tragic scene and by such scene the reader makes the readers feel that Brother loves his brother Doodle and for such love he tried to protect him from an outside world.
