Have you ever witnessed the time where you saw your loved one paying less attention to you and care more about what is happening in the outside world? Isn’t it one of the most upsetting moments you can feel when you see your relationship fade away? Richard Rodriguez wrote a short narrative describing the fade of care he experiences in a Christmas celebration with his family by using and memorable flashback, fur coat symbolism, thorough imagery, and rhetorical question. He first begins by flashbacking to the time when his siblings and him were little kids and their mother wanted them to be rich and successful when they grow up. Then he shifts the time to a Christmas (when they are all successful adults) where he sees everyone felt obligated to be there and they wanted to leave. His mother always wanted him “to grow up and be very rich”(5) so he would buy her “presents”(6). This immortal flashback shows how his mother only cared about money, and becoming successful in life. When they were little kids she didn’t teach them that not everything is about money, and she never told them to be caring toward their own family. All she cared about was money that her children would spend for her when she becomes “ a little old lady”(6). He also brings attention to the “big fur coat”(9) that his mother wants him to buy when Rodriguez becomes rich.
