Reading Response: Jonathan Edwards and the battle between being a Christian and being human
This reading response is going to be focused on the inner battle of Jonathan Edwards. in Jonathan Edwards sermon “Sinners in the hands of an angry God” Edwards continually talks about serving an absolute God that controls everything and owes human beings nothing but punishment. Edwards also speaks on how being a preacher has its pros and cons, because even though he is a conformed Christian who teacher’s others about God, he is still a human being first and dealing with his own personal issues. Edwards dealing with his own personal issues causes conflict as a preacher due to his responsibility to other Christians and bringing them to God.

Edwards loved his relationship with God so much that he would constantly question why God chose him to lead other people because Gods beauty and grace is so overwhelming how could a sinner like himself ever be close to such beauty. Edwards was always seeking salvation even as a young man but while seeking salvation he also found eternal damnation and the preaching of fire and brimstone to be horrible because why should some be saved and others be tossed into hell. After searching his spirit, the preacher decided to write the sermon “Sinners in the hands of an angry God”. The sermon was a conviction on Edwards heart about the judgement that we humans deserve in the eyes of god and what makes salvation and a relationship with God that much more special. During the sermon Edward preaches on hell and how lost souls are continuously tormented and well deserving of the punishment we receive for our misdeeds on the earth. Edwards uses a verse from psalms 73:18 “surely thou didst set them in slippery places; thou castedst them down into destruction.” Edwards uses this verse to say that we have multiple …show more content…

Edwards says “there is no want of power in God to cast wicked men into hell at any moment.” Edwards speaks on how God is not obligated to save all men or to have mercy on all men’s souls but his grace is what keeps us out of the devil’s hands.
