The book that I read is called LockDown By Walter Dean Myers. Walter Dean Myers is known for writing fiction,nonfiction, and poetry books for young adults and children. He is a New York Times bestselling author and the winner of the first Michael L. Printz Award. He lives in Jersey City, New Jersey, with his family.
Mr. Cathey problems begin every day before his college classes even start. Everyone depended on him to help them but they were not prepared or equipped to help him. His focus was always changing from one requirement to another without moving forward in his goals. The author states “all that motion has not helped him get where he needs to be”.

Gerald Graff’s argument on how educational systems are missing a great opportunity to tap into “street smarts” and focus them into a path of academic work is indeed convincing (Graff, 198). After all, anyone who’s been through the American educational system knows odds are often stacked against the “street smarts.” This is especially true in english classes, where one is often required to read boring and somewhat heartless books like, 1984, Beowulf, and the majority of Shakespeare’s classics. This is not to say these books are bad or shouldn’t be read during one’s schooling years, instead, the problem is one of apathy. Frank is introduced as the stereotypical Asian stereotype, a workhorse slave to studying that got into Harvard and achieved perfect test scores. However, when you learn more about his home life, the clear abuses and pressure that his mother put on him make his seemingly immaculate overachiever life much darker. His mother is implied to be fueled by her Korean heritage, which promotes an intense and arduous school experience on students. AP Frank acquired his nickname due to his heavy AP course load, which his mom forced him to do despite his wishes to do sports or extracurricular activities. A significant use of symbolism occurs on page 41, when a white sheet that was made for Mr.Whitman saying “AP FRANK” is washed by Frank’s mother.

What is education and how does that education lead to success? Many authors and historic figures have reached education through many different paths. According to them, being educated does not mean a diploma judges your level of intelligence. Although, it is argued that to be successful one must an educated person. I believe that to be educated, one must not give up in the learning process no matter the difficulty of it because education is involved in one’s success paths, but the way education is learned does not define the destined path to success.
Richard Rodriguez wrote “Scholarship Boy” to explain the range of conflicting emotions he felt over receiving an education while growing up at home with his immigrant parents. He enjoyed school and learned quickly, but soon he knew more than his parents could comprehend. He was ashamed of his parents for not knowing as much as he did and this drove him away from them and more towards his instructors and his books. Though his parents were proud of him, he struggled to feel anything but embarrassed of them and this affected how he viewed himself and the education he was blessed to have. When Gerald Gaff was young, he did not feel that books related to his life and that they, therefore, were not worth reading.
He feels struggled. He had to work harder and received a failing grade on the first paper. However, he said “I was both devastated and determined, my not belonging was verified but I was not ready to be shut down.” He decided to search the school’s library to look up the publishing’s of his Professor. He would write his paper, research the Professors writing style, and then revise his own writing.
