Nicholas Carr introduces his opinion of automation through an example of the overused system of autopilots during an airline flight and questions our growing dependence to technology that is gradually beginning to complete task that we can do for ourselves. Carr moves on to reminisces back to his high school driving lessons, his experiences from driving automatic stick shift to manual stick shift and expresses his joy of being able to be in control of his own vehicle. He then focuses on the self – driving Google car that can effortlessly tours around the California and Nevada area, reporting that an accident did occur but was a manual drivers fault. On the day of October 4, 1951 a women by the name of Henrietta Lacks passed away at the age of thirty-one due to cervical cancer. Even though Lacks died on that day she still lives to this very day. This is because then Lacks was undergoing treatment for her cancer at John Hopkins Hospital her doctor took samples Lack’s tumor caused by the cancer. Researchers tested to see how long her cells could live while outside of her body. Researches were surprised to find out that somehow Lacks’ cells wouldn’t die.
Have you ever heard of Henrietta Lacks, Phineas Gage, or Douglas Mawson? All of these people underwent major struggles for the sake of science, but one stands out more than the rest. Henrietta Lacks was a woman who died at age 31 due to cervical cancer; her cells helped form a multi-million dollar industry (“Immortal Cells, Enduring Issues”). Phineas Gage was a railroad worker who had once shoved a iron rod into a blasting hole, which caused the rod to shoot into his skull. Gage faced side effects from this that led scientists to uncover details on the frontal lobe of the brain, and brain disorders (“The Man with the Hole in his Brain”).
Chapter nine commences by telling its readers about how Lee Harding was diagnosed with E coli 0157:H7. After eating some tacos at a Mexican restaurant, he started to have excruciating stomach pains and diarrhea. Harding’s stomach was hurting because of some frozen hamburgers he ate a couple of days ago. Those same hamburgers provided by Hudson Foods were infected with E. coli 0157:H7. Millions of those same frozen hamburgers had already been sold and most likely eaten.
Stephen Hopkins was born on March 7, 1707 in Scituate (then a part of Providence), Rhode Island. Hopkins was the second oldest signer of the constitution, behind Benjamin Franklin. (1) Growing up Hopkins was supposedly self-educated. Hopkins gained his success purely by his own efforts. Scituate was an agricultural community and Hopkins earned his living farming.
The value of life changes over the years as some mature and deal with mental issues. Like Hamlet I did not know if life had been worth living. Chris Jone’s article on Roger Ebert inspired me to look at the brighter side of life and appreciate what I had been given. Compressing this paragraph down my final theory is, the reason that people only live to be 45 is because the technology and medicine is very primal. In conclusion, the reason that people only live to around the age of 45 is because of one of these three theories, the government is trying to limit the population because they do not want to be overcrowded with people that aren’t aiding the community in some way, the people that no longer work are malnourished and poorly cared for or, the medical technology is very primal and does not suit the needs of the people that are sick and the people that just need help. In the article “Evolution as Fact and Theory” Stephen Jay Gould who is one of the leading theorists in evolution argues that the debate between evolutionists and creationists is pointless since creationists’ arguments lack support and evidence. Gould writes that creationists’ main argument is that evolution is only a theory. However, Gould states that it is not only a theory but also a fact. He suggests that humans evolved from apelike— whether or not is happened by Darwin’s mechanism. What Gould is saying is that there is more than enough evidence to support the theory of evolution and the question that scientists are trying to answer is how exactly all living organisms are linked.
These statistics logically support his argument. The second statistic shows the readers that elderly people will always have to depend on someone as they advanced in age. Towards the end of his essay, Emanuel misguides everything that he addressed. The use of emotional appeals, relatable examples, and statistics made his essay sound persuasive however, at the end he says, " I retain the right to change my mind and offer a vigorous and reasoned defense of living as long as possible" (Emanuel 9). Then what was the point of writing this essay?

“Is Survival Selfish” is an argumentative text written by Lane Wallace. The text focuses on the question of whether survival is an act of selfishness or intelligence. Author Wallace also draws your attention to whether saving someone in dire situations is altruism or idiocy. Throughout the story, the author provides evidence in means to support her claim and reasons. Wallace believes that “self-preservation” isn’t always instinctual and there are many factors involved, including the fact that every survival testing situation is different.
