I adored the scene when they meet in purgatory. Although, they had never been close and life Molly and Rose bonded and empathized with each other in the afterlife. This scene was a contrast from the rest of the play in that the lighting was brighter, and the music had a lighter feel, almost happy. This was due to the thought that they escaped the troubles of the earth for the happiness and trouble free activities of the afterlife. I think this is a very interesting scene because for the majority of the scene they were not aware that they were talking about the same man.
Prompt #3: “ Sonny’s Blues” ( James Baldwin, 1957). In the story, the characters come in conflict with the culture in which he lives. Working Thesis: In my opinion most stories as conflict with one or more of the characters in the story, but how the characters deal with conflict will shapes the theme of a story and if they were to have done something different the theme would change or won’t change. The author wanted that Sonny’s brother to be the narrator of the story because I think he want that the point of view of the narrator will be more different that Sonny. Like how he do flashback when Sonny os not even on there and how the view of Sonny’s family will make his see a trouble maker.

Jonathan Armstead ENGL 364 6380 September 27, 2015 Essay 2 In this paper I will be supporting an argument about how the short story “Sonny's Blues” by James Baldwin paints a theme in the reader's mind about how people used different ways to escape life in the ghetto. It is obvious that Sonny uses music and drugs as his escape from a hard life, while his brother tries to “assimilate” into society by becoming a middle-class worker in education. Even though this story has a lot of themes and symbolism, I chose this theme because I can easily relate to it in this present age where drugs are still a major problem in this country and there are many people who share Sonny's escape from a hard life. My argument is how the short
Author James Baldwin’s short story, Sonny’s Blues, takes place between 1924 - 1987 Harlem, New York, and society’s assumptions towards the black community and moral values during this time period were very skewed. Baldwin demonstrates this through the main characters, Sonny and the unnamed narrator, and their alienation from society because of their class and their alienation from themselves because of creed. These things have formed a metaphorical prison around them. In the 1900s Harlem, blacks were often in the middle or lower class, and Sonny and the narrator were no exception.

In fiction, the narrator controls how the audience connects to and perceives the various characters in a story. A good author can manipulate the narration to connect the audience to certain characters and deepen the reader’s understanding of their conflicts. In “Previous Condition” and “Sonny’s Blues,” James Baldwin illustrates themes of loneliness and isolation in the pursuit of finding a space that feels like home. Although this theme is clear in both stories, Baldwin is able to portray it very differently in each story through the relationship he allows the reader to the characters struggling with these feelings. While “Previous Condition” provides a more intimate relationship to the narrator, “Sonny’s Blues” is able to deliver an additional level of understanding by telling the story through Sonny’s brother, therefore disconnecting the reader in a way that forces him or her to share the characters’ feelings of isolation and confusion.
