In ‘The Colonel’ Carolyn Forche introduces us to a character which have couple of characteristics, which we will see them throughout the poem. The author is invited to dinner by the person who is called the colonel, and as her poem talks about her visit to this colonel person we will know that he is infamous, paranoid and violent person, and we will see that these characteristics are shown couple of times. For example the infamous trait is shown in the beginning of the poem, when the author starts her poem but talking about this person in a mysterious way. It starts with “What you have heard is true.” This means that the colonel must have a bad reputation or rumors that he is a very bad person, then the author continues with “I was in his house.” So she is confirming that she saw, and by saying “I was in his house.” means that she is certain that the rumours that go around the colonel are true and he really is an infamous person, and him having a regular family does not change anything about his infamous trait. …show more content…

These are a typical family thing, but the colonel has a pistol next to him, and there were traps all around his house so if someone tries to get into the house will probably get hurt badly, the windows have bars and that makes them impossible for someone to get in or out. All These things show that how scared and paranoid the colonel is, because he has turned his house into a fortress to keep him safe from outside
