Multicultural education is a reform movement for school of diversity. It came to be known during the civil rights movement of the 1960s and the 1970s. If planned out carefully and thoughtfully, it will transform schools, colleges, universities and other learning institutes. Multiculturalism is mainly used by diversity critics to describe the practices the practices they directly opposed or is mutually incompatible to the Western Canon. The purpose is to give each student the freedom to voice their opinion, give each student justice, and give each student their equality. Banks’ “Multicultural Education and Curriculum Transformation”, does not state a certain history that is studied. Banks talks about different cultures and focus on how to get a diverse student to be engage. Banks seems to encourage students to learn about their culture along with the next student’s culture. Banks provides points that can help with the education reform. Banks also points out some flaws in theories, methods and practices. In Arthur Schlesinger Jr.’s essay “The Disuniting of America”, was more descriptive and informative. Schlesinger gives very good pints as well. Schlesinger talks about how other races cannot well are told they cannot, reenact or direct films about blacks. Schlesinger provides more examples. Banks until he says all subject area should focus on taking action to help increase a more democratic race attitude and values. If all subject areas focus on history then ho will students learn science, math, reading, and writing. If subject areas practice history value every year, eventually teachers will start repeating things over and over again. Eventually the values of the other subject areas would not be important. I feel as if student will become illiterate when it comes to the other subjects. For example, a student goes to the store looking for a dictionary. He has the idea that he can enhance his vocabulary. The student makes the cashier and he is having problem with counting his money. He has a long line behind him and the cashier is starting to get frustrated. He finally gives the cashier the money but he still is unsure if he gives the cashier the correct amount of money. The cashier gives him charge back but how is he to know if the cashier gave him the correct amount of charge. All subject area should focus on the subject area.
