In the article “We’re Sick of Racism, Literally,” Douglas Jacobs argued that those who “experienced racism were more likely to have blood pressure”, thus meaning discrimination can affect physical health(Jacobs). He expatiates on how discrimination is leading to health problems by sharing medical records of people who were discriminated against. Jacobs criticizes how racist people in the United States are “[adding] injury to insult and magnifies the suffering of these times” which leads him to assert that racism should be eliminated. Jacobs believes that racism does not belong in this world due to its malicious nature and how it affects the human body which is why he wants to remove it. During this English class, we learned about past and present traumas faced by Indigenous people in order to reconcile and learn from our mistakes. To reconcile and learn about past traumas we have to be able to see how discrimination still happens today and how racism is still present in our world today. Both the texts AlterNatives by Drew Hayden Taylor and The Summer of Bitter and Sweet by Jen Ferguson are appropriate for NBE3U-E because they teach students about the underlying stereotypes and discrimination towards Indigenous people as well as the violence that still happens today. What is the purpose of racism? In Theorizing Nationalism, Day and Thompson discuss how racism and nationalism are precisely the same. Racism has the ability to help build nationalism, especially in our young country. LeMay and Barkan in U.S. Immigration & Naturalization Laws & Issues talk about how this racism is used during a specific time period, 1880 to 1920, in the United States of America. Both of these articles argue that when the United States was in a time of peril, they used racism as a unifying factor to bring the country together and as a way to put a group of people lower than themselves to bring their status to a higher point in society.
Many students reacted in anger and disappointment because they didn’t feel like it was fair to be judged on the color of their eyes. This experiment illustrates discrimination perfectly. It put the students into an African Americans shoes and made the students realize how hard it is to live life when always being discriminated on the way that you look. Jane Elliot was a third grade teacher that tried an experiment with her class to educate her students on the effects of discrimination. Elliot separated her class based on their eye color in order to explain how people are treated differently in the world. She tried to find a way to explain racism in the world in a way that third graders would understand. I was actually surprised when I heard there had been an altercation on the playground the day of the experiment. A blue eyed student teased a brown eyed student which resulted in the brown eyed student engaging in a physical altercation with the blue eyed student.
Jane Elliot Split her 3rd grade c lass into two different groups brown eyed group and the blue eyed group; before splitting them she asked them is being discriminating to others right and they answer the way she expected them to answer because it has been taught to them since they have been in her class, she then proceeded to ask them why was it wrong and they could not give her a clear answer she also ask them would they like to know how it feels to be discriminated against and they all said yes. She conducted this exercise for a total of two days she started the first day off letting the children know that the brown eyed students were more smarter and all around better than the blue eyed student. She then withness some of the sweetest kids turn into nasty discriminating adolescence they tease the blue eyed children every chance they could.
She made the brown eyed kids wear collars so they could be easily identified. Elliot did multiple things that at the time society was doing to African Americans. She made the brown eyed kids not drink from the fountain, there was no going on the swing set during recess, and the brown eyed people could not go back for seconds at lunch. Elliot did a few simple tests with flashcards and timed each group of kids. The blue eyed people did significantly better than the brown eyed people.
The experiment of ‘A Class Divided’ is a lesson taught by Jane Elliot about discrimination and how it feels to be discriminated against. She first conducted this experiment in 1968 with her class of third graders, she divides people by eye colour and provides collars for them, and she then makes a group of rules separating them and observes how they’re discriminated against in a controlled environment. The experiment breached many ethical guidelines, this is because the experiment wouldn’t have worked otherwise. The rights of the participants was breached in order to achieve accurate results and so that people would feel the humiliation and cage of discrimination.

For instance, point of views such as how society learned to function the way it does, the law and order in place, and ultimately, how circumstances have developed throughout history.
