Lab Report #2 In the psychology abstract, The Ethics of Counseling: A National Survey of Certified Counselors, the authors examine counselors and what they do or do not view as ethical in regards to actions or scenarios as a counselor. This research shines light on the lack of ethical training for counselors. However, American Counseling Association (ACA) formed an ethical code for their counselors and other counseling services have been following suit. The research was conducted by sending out survey questionnaires to “1,024 counselors who were certified by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC). The questionnaire was anonymous and answers coded to make sure the counselor's identities remained anonymous. Of the 1,024 counselors asked to participate 579 counselors completed questionnaires were received. Counselors were asked to list their age, sex, and education. The independent variable in this experiment was that all the questionnaires sent out to the counselors are contained the same questions and rate scale. The dependent variable is what the counselors would answer and what scale they would rate the question on. The research conducted results that showed many counselors saw “ethical judgement items overwhelmingly endorsed as unethical. There were 21 behaviors that at least 90% of the participants judge to be unethical. Almost one fourth (24%) of these were sexual behaviors. The findings suggest that counselors may more consistently sensitive than are other mental health professionals to the harm caused by sexual involvements with clients” (333). Interesting comparison that came out of this research is that younger counselors are more likely to be more personal and allowing hugging and a client calling them by their first name compared to older counselors.
