Reading “The Joy of reading and Writing: Superman and Me,” allowed me to walk away with a different viewpoint of reading and writing. Alexie, grew up on an indian reservation in Washington. He tells us his experiences as a child, and how developing a love for reading and writing helped him succeed past the expectations of being a stereotypical indian. Alexie shares with us how he first learns to read, how his arrogance made him smarter, and how as an adult he is able to visit indian reservations to give other indian children a better chance at learning to read and write. Alexie was able to use the love for his father to develop a love for books. Just as his father brought home books, my mother did as well. But it was for a different purpose other than the importance of her knowledge to gain while reading. I was homeschooled the earlier years of my school career, so most of the books were specifically for me. My mother never got to attend college, just like Alexie’s settlement she grew up in a house where it wasn’t even expected of her to pass high school, and if it weren’t for my love and respect for my mother I would not have developed a love and respect for education like she had. It motivated me when she told me that there was a ticket out there to help me be more successful. Based on my family’s background alone I wasn’t even expected to be successful. But since I was able to develop a passion for education, I was able to put in a high amount of dedication to learning. That dedication is what has brought me here today, and it has made me who I am, the first person in my family to attend
