Kalief Browder, a 16 year old who was arrested for a robbery he did not commit. He spent three years in jail with no conviction. James Brown an impoverished day laborer, charged with murder and waited eight and a half years for his case to go to trial. Meanwhile waiting for his trial, his alibi witness had died of kidney disease. Kalief nor James could afford bail, so they had to suffer in jail for a crime they did not convict. Kalief went though such a rough. The time he spent in jail made his loose his mind. The Supreme Court ruled that every person who is charged with a crime has the right to a legal representation, but as Laura Parker said, the promise is an empty one for many income defendants. She was unable to post bail so she was put behind bars while she waited for her court date. Michelle Alexander said, approximately 80 percent of criminal defendants are indigent and thus unable to hire a lawyer. If someone is actually able to get a lawyer they are not represented fairly because one lawyer has more than 100 clients at a time. The working conditions are terrible and the pay is so lows that they get discouraged, therefore the defendant does not have a fair trial. Most of these people have committed minor convictions and are treated like a herd of “cattle” because they do not have the money to post bail.
