There are thousands of novels written every year, and only a select few win awards. It’s a competitive market, and the Pulitzer Prize is one of the toughest to win. Back in 1939 (wikipedia.com), The Yearling won this prestigious award. Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings deserved the Pulitzer Prize for her novel for many reasons, including her creative uses of figurative language, syntax, and sensory details. Her several uses of figurative language enhanced her writing by describing the situations in the novel in creative ways.
The Tyndale Code by Daniel Patterson is a Christian fiction that depicts the biblical archaeologist Zack Cole’s search for the killer of a Catholic priest and a priceless 1526 Bible crafted by William Tyndale in Guatemala. Author Daniel Patterson gives his characters a certain animation that makes the one feel as though they were part of the story. For instance, this action style of writing is evident when Zack’s motel room is stormed by a border agent looking for money. However, in response, Zack electrocutes the invader with a Taser, evading a bullet soon after the Taser was applied.
The book The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down: A Hmong Child, Her American Doctors, and the Collision of Two Cultures by Anne Fadiman is based on a true story that delves into the life of Lia Lee, a young epileptic Hmong child (Fadiman, 2012). It focuses on Lia’s condition and her family’s experiences through the problem with the sole purpose of highlighting the collision between two cultures including the American and Hmong culture, and the effect that the cultures have on her health. Fadiman gives a detailed report on the complicated interactions between all the people around Lia and uncovers the deep struggles experienced in the pursuit of her well-being. When Pony surveys the gang before the rumble, we get some valuable insight into each of the surveyed boys. Their responses allow us to understand each character a little more. Their answers reflect who they are and what they think of the world, However, two members of the gang were not present at this inquiry; Dally and Johnny. The short story “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan explains a mother and daughter relationship that has many differences within a conflict in the story. The narrator demonstrates that the mother and the daughter do not agree with the same aspect on life. Since the mother wants her daughter to be perfect, the daughter refuses to make her mother’s wishes come true. Her mother wanted the narrator to become the perfect traditional daughter, but the narrator’s differences triggered with her mother. An indication from the story is, “Unlike my mother, I did not believe I could be anything I wanted to be, I could only be me” (137).

Molding of the Perfect Woman: An Analysis of Jamaica Kincaid’s “Girl” “…on Sundays try to walk like a lady and not like the slut you are so bent on becoming…” (Kincaid, 320). This phrase accurately represents the point that is being made in this passage. In Jamaica Kincaid’s piece, “Girl”, her mother is giving her advice on how to be and act like a proper woman. The mom came from a tough background, moving to San Francisco after losing her parents, her family home, her first husband, and two twin baby girls. She “believed you could be anything you wanted to be in America”, so she didn’t regret her decision.
In the poem, “A Hymn to Childhood,” Li-Young Lee talks about having fragmented individuality from childhood due to war. He is lost in perception of a traumatic childhood caused by war and a normal naïve childhood. Lee depicts the two diverged childhoods from his memory through the use of antithesis to emphasize the world perceived by a self fragmented individual. Throughout the poem, he consistently presents two opposing ideas to show what it feels like to grow up with emotional trauma.
