Inspiring young people to do tremendous things in their lives. However, the Olympics are more than just this, they are economic development and acknowledgment for host countries. Pre 1960, sport in the UK required little or no government involvement. It was mainly organised by amateur sports clubs. The findings of the Wolfenden Report, published in 1960, recommended a spotlight on young people’s involvement in sport, sports facilities to be developed in order to help increased sport provision and improvement in the coaching and administration of sport. More importantly, it warned of the concern about the drop off in participation between school based sport and club based/adult sport attendance. 1960-1990, saw the increase in the development of sports facilities, such as local authority leisure centres and swimming pools.

The Calgary Olympics encourages investment in transportation, many foreign visitors that will come will bring a boost to the local economy. A major sporting event like the Olympics can attract thousands of people for the duration of the games. This creates jobs for the local economy for up to 4 years before the event. These extra jobs help create a positive effect on the local economy. Since Alberta is in a recession it will help bring us back to normal and people will know more about Calgary and it's culture.

For example, following the Olympic Games, the structure built for the event was renamed Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and then used for numerous sporting events. To stay relevant in today’s society, the International Olympic Committee must continue to find ways to attract young viewers, adapt to new viewing technology, and perpetuate the athletes in sporting events for future generations. The amount of children participating in competitive sports has been on a steady decline in the past decade. Between the years of 2008 and 2013, the total number of children participating in competitive sports has dropped by approximately 2.6 million. This is mainly due to the many negative impacts that young athletes face when partaking in these sports. Competitive sports involve sports where competition is encouraged, and where winning is more important than anything else. Competing in these sports causes the children to be vulnerable to many risks and many other negative impacts.
