Glory is a movie about the Massachusetts 54th Regiment. Robert Shaw leads the black soldiers, who were freemen or escaped slaves. The men of the 54th were treated very poorly and not given the chance to fight in combat because of their color. Shaw gets them to fight and their first battle is a victory. All the men of the 54th had a strong passion and want to fight. Shaw offered his men to lead the attack on Fort Wagner. The men had to attack going up a hill which was a major disadvantage. This battle resulted in the loss of many of the 54th men. Glory is any honor someone receives. The movie is entitled Glory because the men of the 54th went out and fought for the first time, which was an honorable achievement. They showed that colored men can fight and can fight well. They all wanted to fight for their freedom. Their experience in the Civil War was not the best. The leaders of the 54th were harsh on the soldiers, but that was only to ensure their preparedness for war. They also did not get the blue suits or proper supplies, like shoes. Trip was desperate to find shoes, so one day he went off to look for them. Trip was whipped because they thought he was trying to run away. Another struggle they faced was the men of the 54th only got paid ten dollars a month while white men got paid thirteen dollars a month. The men refused to accept the money because of the pay gap they were receiving. Robert started out being very harsh and mean to his soldiers but overtime he came to respect them and care for them. For that reason, he volunteered them to be the first attack on Fort Wagner to show what his soldiers were capable of.
